McLaren Unique X-1 Concept 2012 Review

The Quail was an exclusive event held on August 17 and its purpose was to highlight the best moments during the Pebble Beach event held last weekend. During The Quail a new bespoke supercar has made an appearance and managed to steal the spotlight in an instant. The McLaren Unique X-1 Concept 2012 comes from the British manufacturer's Special Operations division responsible for the delivery of bespoke projects.

The X-1 is a one-off unique supercar that has been exclusively designed and built for an anonymous car enthusiast. The buyer remained anonymous but the MSO (McLaren Special Operations) Programme Director did mention that their anonymous client already owns a McLaren F1 and a Mercedes Benz SLR. He also mentioned that the foundation of the X-1 has been set before the company has launched the McLaren 12C. The anonymous buyer wanted to encapsulate the performances and abilities of the 12C in a unique body that will "reflect his needs and personality".

Thus the X-1 was created, boasting the same 3.8 liter V8 engine as its not-so-unique counterpart. Since the Concept is based on the McLaren MP4-12C we can safely assume that it outputs the same amount of 592 horsepower and is able to go from 0 to 60 mph in roughly 3.3 seconds.

But that's enough when it comes to performances. It's basically a new body built on the MP4so there's no mystery what it can do in terms of performances. However the design is what manages to steal the spotlight. The X-1 is quite different from every other supercar currently available on the market. Despite the fact that it possesses one of the most powerful engines on the market the design cues are elegant and the car draws inspiration from classics such as the 1961 Facel Vega, the 1959 Buick Electra, the 1971 Citroen SM, the 1953 Chrysler D'Elegance Ghia and the 1939 Mercedes Benz 540K.

The entire body has been built from carbon and has been finished in piano black. Every body part has been designed exclusively for this particular car including the headlamps and taillights. The brightwork such as the McLaren Speed Marque badge has been machined from solid aluminum and finished in nickel, and the airbrake rear wing has been machined from the same material and has been nickel plated as the rest of the brightwork.

Dimensions have also changed when compared to the 12C and the X-1 now measures 4,658 mm in length which means it's 109 mm longer than its counterpart. The Concept is also 188 mm wider but the height and weight remains the same.

On the interior the overall architecture has not been changed but the X-1 has been enhanced by bespoke Harissa Red Nappa leather as well as aluminum, carbon fiber and nickel-coated elements.

The cost of building the McLaren Unique X-1 Concept 2012 has not been revealed but we expect it to be much more expensive than your "regular" MP4-12C or your Ferrari 458 Italia.
