LINCOLN UNVEILS REVOLUTIONARY TOURING VEHICLE CONCEPT
Premium Utility Offers Ultimate Elegance, Space, Efficiency

  • Growth opportunity: The Lincoln MKT concept shows a new potential vehicle for Lincoln, demonstrating that the new design language works as well on a spacious luxury utility vehicle as it does luxury sedans like the newly introduced Lincoln MKS.
  • EcoBoost Power: Ford’s global solution for improving fuel economy for millions of customers – EcoBoost engine technology – powers Lincoln MKT’s 3.5-liter, E-85-capable engine.
  • Responsible Luxury: The Lincoln MKT concept reaches a new level of responsible luxury with the use of more environmentally friendly materials that offer a premium look and feel.
DETROIT, MI., Jan 14, 2008 – Lincoln today pulls the wraps off a new concept vehicle that shows customers a new way to tour in comfortable and luxurious style.

The Lincoln MKT concept features a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, part of Ford’s global solution for improving fuel economy while still delivering driving performance, and a host of other responsible technologies and amenities.

“Building on Lincoln’s momentum, the Lincoln MKT concept demonstrates how else we could grow the Lincoln lineup,” says Mark Fields, president of The Americas. “This full-size premium utility offers the comfort of a luxury sedan, the spaciousness and flexibility of a full-size utility and the performance of a sporty roadster – crafted with excellence and ‘green’ materials that make it as responsible as it is elegant.”

The Lincoln MKT concept features the dramatic double-wing chrome grille with satin silver inserts, encapsulating beautiful Light Emitting Diode (LED) headlamps that wrap around into the sculptured hood giving the luxury utility a powerful presence.

The MKT concept features an elegant body side chamfer running along the shoulder, with dynamic haunches over the rear wheel arches. Inset into each front fender and traveling through the door panels are chrome Lincoln stars with spears that add visual length to the car. Meanwhile, winged, curb-clearing doors give the car a dramatic sense of direction, agility and forward movement.

A formal C-pillar further differentiates the concept from other premium vehicles by creating an aura of privacy for the rear occupants. Like limousines, the MKT cuts an interesting profile – long, low and comfortably wide. The signature roofline runs the entire length of the greenhouse and remains uninterrupted. The roof itself is glass, allowing in natural light.

As an unconventional surprise, designers incorporated a bustle-back into the Lincoln MKT concept. The classic look creates an efficient, usable vertical space by turning the horizontal deck on end. This provides massive storage capacity in the rear of the vehicle, crucial for any trip.

From the rear, the concept is instantly recognizable as a Lincoln, thanks to full-width LED taillamps stretching from side to side.

The exterior is bathed in a rich Liquid Bronze Metallic paint that compliments the chrome brightwork. Sitting on intricate 14-spoke interlocking chrome aluminum wheels with body color accents, the wheels on the MKT are fitted to 21-inch Michelin tires creating an ideal wheel-to-body proportion.

“With the Lincoln MKT concept, we worked hard to create a sense of elegant movement,” said Peter Horbury, executive director of Design, The Americas. “This grand touring vehicle concept is as at home in the city as it is in more wide open spaces, like country lanes meant for performance driving.”

Responsible Power

Underneath the hood, the Lincoln MKT concept showcases EcoBoost, Ford’s global solution for improving fuel economy for millions of customers – without compromising performance feel.

The Lincoln MKT’s engine also is flex-fuel capable, providing the driver with the flexibility to switch back and forth between gasoline and E-85 ethanol. Combining the high octane found in E-85 or premium gasoline with EcoBoost technology, the MKT concept’s V-6 engine delivers 415 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque – an impressive 118 horsepower per liter.

Achieving this type of performance from a V-8 would require an engine displacement of 6.0-liter or larger, nearly double the size of the 3.5-liter in the Lincoln MKT. As a result of the smaller V-6, the Lincoln MKT concept delivers 15 percent better fuel economy than a V-8 with similar performance.

The concept’s engine is mated to a six-speed transmission, and features independent rear suspension for more refined road manners.

Also contributing to fuel efficiency of the MKT are eco-friendly “up-cycled” materials. Two recycled plastic materials were used in making the Lincoln MKT body panels, energy absorbers, wire bundles and glazing. The resins are made from discarded soft-drink bottles and other polyester waste helping save landfills, reduce energy consumption and shrink the vehicle’s overall carbon footprint.

The “up-cycled” plastics also produce parts that are lighter than traditional materials, further improving the vehicle’s fuel economy. Some applications of the resin also improve overall noise and vibration and help the vehicle resist heat and chemicals.

Luxury of Space, More Responsible Materials

Drivers and passengers alike will appreciate the Lincoln MKT concept’s spaciousness – right down to the seats that mirror those found in first-class aircraft cabins. Four executive-sized chairs offer utmost comfort]. As an added pleasure, second-row heated and cooled thigh supports deploy from under the seats, while footrests deploy rearward from the front seats, allowing passengers to fully recline.

The vehicle’s symmetrical interior design divides the cabin thoughtfully, providing all four passengers equal access to the vehicle’s appointments.

“Whether someone is slipping into the backseat to conduct a business call on the way to their next meeting or a family is packed up for a drive to the beach, the MKT concept is designed to deliver you in the utmost comfort and style,” said Gordon Platto, chief designer.

Through the use of soothing tone-on-colors, eco-friendly materials, ambient lighting and flexible storage, the MKT concept offers customers a unique combination of serenity and connectivity.

For the center stack, designers invented a new patented solid-state lighting technology with the capability to perform three-dimensional projection onto a contoured surface. Until now, all projection was limited to flat surfaces with square or rectangular boundaries like a flat-screen television.

For the MKT concept, this allowed designers to use non-traditional shapes and spaces for the center stack, customizing it for customers’ storage needs and more efficiently utilizing interior space.

The expansive instrument panel and twin-level center console, finished in a reconstituted oak veneer, house an assortment of technologies, including the instrument cluster inspired by the sparkle of crystals. It uses a small number of strategically positioned LEDs, creating the illusion of floating light that appears to emanate from the center of three circular dials and radiate to the outer edge of the dials.

The MKT concept’s center console runs the entire length of the vehicle, creating a feeling of continuity between the upper and lower portion of the cabin, which contains individual air vents, audio and climate controls and personal storage. The console also houses an overhead entertainment with LCD screen that folds down and articulates for rear-passenger viewing.

The flat screen contours into the recess of the floating overhead console for storage and also hides two small cameras, each aimed at one of rear seats to provide on-screen “conference calling.”

In the rear, a smart space behind the rear seats provides storage without compromising the concept’s design. Designers included a hydraulic system that raises a series of rails behind the rear seats to allow flat-load storage. The rails can be raised and lowered in different configurations to provide compartmentalization for storage items.

Responsible luxury amenities include the plush, hand-knotted rug made from banana silk that covers the floor and complements the contrasting Creamy Pearl chromium-free leather-trimmed seats.

Completing the well-detailed design: accents of chrome that highlight the MKT concept’s intricate interior design, including a one-piece sculpted door handle that contains the door grab, the door locking mechanism and door release. On it, designers have inscribed a unique baroque-inspired detail that punctuates the concept’s craftsmanship.

“The MKT concept truly is harmony in motion because all of the colors, materials and shapes come together to form a feeling of well-being,” Horbury said. “We’ve created a rewarding experience by using soft tones and tactile materials – subtle touches that demonstrate Lincoln’s design strengths. We’ve struck the perfect balance of the vehicle as both a sanctuary and functional work space.”
