The lower half takes a lot from the S80 (tail lights, slightly bulbous hood).

I'm really really really liking this car. first of all, 220 HP T5 w/ AWD (drool), secondly, it's just like the Mazda 3 hatch but it just looks better!

Why aren't they calling it the V40 ?
clarkma5
Dec 4 2003, 03:52 PM
Because they have a new naming system now, where the sedans are divisible by 20 and the wagon versions of the sedans are 10 more than the sedans.
Read: S40 & V50, S60 & V70, S80 & V90 (if they ever make a V90)...

Looks good... I really like Volvos of late.
I find Volvo to have the most difficult to understand naming scheme. I agree that they've gotten better recently, but its still rather confusing.

But this one is available with a 218HP turbocharged engine. And has very cool looking wheels.

It's a WRX competitor that's just plain BETTER! I'd take it over the Saab 9-2 any day.

I think it looks pretty cool, I'd love to have one. I think this is the T5 version...
clarkma5
Dec 5 2003, 01:54 PM
Yes, that is the T5; the sport package wheels (T5 only) are the tip-off.

The high-performance Volvo V50 T5 will be powered by a 218 horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-litre engine putting out 236 ft-lbs of torque. The T5 will be offered with either a 6-speed manual transmission developed for the Volvo S60 R and V70 R or a 5-speed automatic with Geartronic sequential shifting. The T5 can also be ordered with electronically-controlled all-wheel drive.

The 90 of course is the XC90.
that's the XC series.
I doubt they'll make a V90, but that would be nice. They've made them before (off of the S90)

current Volvo naming system in laymans terms
If it starts with "S" then it's a sedan
If it starts with a "V" then it's a wagon
If it starts with a "C" then it's a Coupe
If it starts with an "XC" then it's kinda sorta SUV-like, generally.
if you see an "S" car look at the number proceeding it. Replace the "S" with a "V" and you have the wagon. S60=V70. S40=V50.
there ya go
