Virgina considers a ban on spinner wheels

The Virginia House Transportation Committee is considering legislation (H.B. 2390) that would prohibit the use of spinner wheels, wheel covers and hubcaps. The bill blatantly ignores the fact that custom wheels are not prohibited by Federal law and should not be restricted in Virginia. The facts are that the Federal government rescinded the entire hub cap standard in 1996 when it was concluded that there was no safety problem relating to hub caps, and that the standard was overly design-restrictive.
Furthermore, manufacturers are also required to notify the federal government of any safety problem or defect related to motor vehicle equipment within five days of becoming aware of any problems. Most importantly, there are no proven facts that spinners have a detrimental effect on motor vehicle safety.

Taken from a truck forum I visit on occasion. Lots of guys there like the bling bling and spinney wheels.

Hah, yes! Get rid of this shit.... though, hah, I was kinda hoping it would phase out over time and not have an axe cut its head off so abruptly or for a stupid reason like this.

Another great example of governments concentrating on really important things.

I'm torn! I hate spinners, but the government has no place restricting them.
PAULIE_D
It's not an issue of these types of wheels posing a safety risk due to their integrity.. I'm sure they are made well.

It's a safety risk due to the level of visual distraction they cause to other motorists.
clarkma5
Eh, that's a pretty weak argument, paulie.

You ban spinners on that basis and you basically have to ban chrome wheels too...spinners aren't significantly more distracting than non-spinner chrome wheels, they're just stupider.

Government has now banned Ferraris. Especially red ones.

I'm with clark... the government has no right restricting those. If people really want them, let them have 'em. It in no way effects me. I still wouldn't get them for my car, but they are nice to look at in traffic tongue_orig.gif

Point taken.. but at least a government ban on 'spinnahs' would effectibely remove this automotive eyesore off the streets.

3 foot tall aluminum wings on street cars should also be banned. wink.gif

No joke.. I saw an otherwise stock mid-90's BMW 5-series with one of these aluminum wings with tall stanchions... looked horrid. Wish I had my camera with me.
