So I've written the test and successfully obtained my temporary Class-D-licence from the Ministry of Transportation. Then, starting in February I will begin my practical driver training on a large truck in preparation for a final road test to obtain my permanent Class-D licence.

A D-licence in Ontario allows you to drive trucks weighing 24,000 lbs or more.
QUOTE
Class of licence: D - Types of vehicles allowed: Any truck or motor vehicle combination exceeding 11,000 kg (24,000 lbs) provided the towed vehicle is not over 4,600 kg (10,000 lbs)

Wish me luck!

^ I will be driving a truck like this for work related purposes.

*Note: high speed jumps are not part of the practical driver training sessions wink.gif

And why are you getting a truck license?

Good luck.

Totally voluntary. But my employer is covering the expenses since they need to build a pool of employees with D-licences.

Well, I suppose I could always take a second job transporting stuff. But this licence would basically be needed so that I could drive a specialized vehicle where I currently work.

Hmm, cool coincidence. I'm starting school tommorow for my Class 1 licence (thats what its called in Alberta). My dad owns a small company (3 trucks) and I'd like to be able to help him out if he needs a hand. Also, it'll be a nice change of pace from welding when I need a break from fusing metal. biggrin.gif

I've been around trucks all my life, and I've known how to drive since I was like 14 so I'm sure it'll be a cake walk. Even backing up a 5 axle is easy for me.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. Here's an update:

I've had my D-licence for a while now.

I was out of town last week and I had the responsibiity of driving an International truck for my employer. Was about a 300 km trip one way.

I have a renewed respect for truck drivers. You certainly have a lot more to concentrate on when you drive a large vehicle such as this.

I was continually frustrated with the slow acceleration and limited top speed, especially on uphill grades. Fun.. but tiring.

Holy fucking old thread ressurection O_O

We call it a CDL here.. Commercial Drivers License. I've thought about getting a job as a truck driver...

I've got mad respect for truck drivers actually. Working at Walmart I met a lot and they were some cool people. Also I notice that most truck drivers give me a lot of space on the freeway and such since I drive a tiny little car. They look out for me.. Now If I could get fuckers in minivans and SUV's to do that....

may i ask what your job entails, besides driving big trucks??
