Halfway though the carwash a few mins ago, and what is that i feel? Water dripping down my neck through the sunroof. Does it end there? Of course not. Out comes the 'Rocker Panel Blaster' which proceeds to spray ungodly amounts of water at the exact spot my sunroof seems to be having a bladder problem.... I was getting so drenched, i had to take off my glasses because i couldnt see through them....
Thanks VW! Always lookin out for those of us who neglect to take showers...

Oddness; the seals in both of my VWs haven't let in a single drop.
Then again, I've never gone through an automatic car wash because those = evil. He got what he deserved, in other words!

Good thing I don't care about many VW's over the age of of 1992. The GTi lost their heart around then.

Man, I hate that accusation.
1) The definition of a proper GTI, for many people, is impossibly narrow; they ONLY want a MkI or MkII car and there's no way in hell a new car could possibly ever be a good GTI for them.
2) VW has made the MkIV GTI better and better over the last few years, and by "better" I mean "more like a proper GTI"...I can say that having owned a 2002 and a 2004 model back to back. The 2002 was spongy, bloated, and not a lot of fun, while the 2004 is frisky and nimble with a fair deal of feedback. It's not the peak of GTI-ness, but it's hardly the lowpoint. And it just really bugs me when people who are judging MkIVs by the pre-2003 cars just say "THE NEW ONES ARE BAD".
They're not, fuckers. They're small, practical, economical, affordable and a helluva lot of fun to drive, EXACTLY LIKE THE ORIGINAL. Jesus fucking christ.

I don't mind MKIII or MKIV, but I wouldn't own one, most likley because I cannot afford them.
VW started to make them heavier, bigger, and they decided to put V6's in them, they started to become luxurious also. They're not as basic as they used to be. They're getting a lot more complex. They definitly lost sight to what a real GTi was.
I think they had their mind on what a true drivers car was, not what a true GTi was.
Of course lots of people say the first GTi is the real GTi... because.... it is. The original is always the best. People do not like change.
Personaly, in my opinion your GTi is a truest a MKIV can be. But the VR6's, fully loaded with leather seats are cool and all, but shouldn't be labled as a GTi.
By the way, this reminds me a lot of the G60 fight.

You're focusing on the wrong end of the Mk3/Mk4 spectrum. Don't look at the VR6s, or the tiptronics, or the ones with leather and 15" golf wheels. Look at the 337, the 20th Anniversary, or a car like mine that has no sunroof, no leather, NO FRIVOLITY.
My car is a modern version of the old GTI; it's simple, compact, and quick. You just have to realize that the definition of "simple" changes over time. Keyless entry and power windows weren't simple when GTI #1 rolled off the line, but they are definitely now. I'm constantly happy that my car doesn't have satellite navigation or weird keyless start shit or any number of techno shit.
What it all boils down to is that it's got a seat to sit your ass in, a 5-speed to shift, an engine to rev, and some tunes on the radio. You're hard-pressed to get any simpler in this day and age.

That's the point. I don't want that stuff. I don't want all those electronics, I don't want those heavy airbags, I don't want that stuff. That is why I do not want a MKIV. I know it's this time and age, but I do not like this time and age.
I will admit, they get their insight back around 2003, but still... the majority of the MKIV sucked.

Well, hence my frustration. Your mindset is too narrow (but perfectly understandable).
I guess my venting is directed more at those who start off their GTI V loving by hating on the MkIV. The GTI V is an excellent car, but damned if it doesn't have a lot of the same problems as the GTI IV...too much comfort and equipment at the expense of performance.
I fought that by getting the simplest, most performance-oriented non-special edition MkIV possible, and I find it strikes a fantastic compromise between performance and comfort, especially given the price; I would be very happy with it shifted even further toward the performance end of the spectrum, but I find it difficult to complain too much.
I dunno how to wrap up my ramblings. I guess I'm just annoyed at people who look at the soft, option-loaded GTIs (especially those from when the MkIV first came out) and decry the whole line-up. The current GTI doesn't HAVE to be a big, wallowy marshmallow of a car if you pick the right one. And I've gone and picked the right one and people still look down their nose at my car and it drives me nuts.

I'd like to mention, I'm pretty sure your car would be funner & cooler to own. But, some things were lost to what a GTi is. When, I say MKIV lost it's sight to what GTi is, I meant that they had an optional V6! What the hell!? It's mostly the options that the MKIV gave out that made it not a real GTi. You can still have a real GTi in the MKIV, but only around 2003.... which is too late.

Yeah, I know. We both got what we like. We got what suits are needs.

... I think they're both good cars, but he likes MKIV more then me, and I like MKII more then him. Everyone is different. Everything has differences. VW is something that a VW owner can only understand.

I'm not arguing with him so much as just ranting against MkIV haters in general. He's not a hater so I'm not yelling at him.

I'm not a hater, I just believe some certain things about them, and sinse I cannot afford them, I don't bother looking at them.

... you know, by saying that I bet if I looked into them more, I'd probably like them, this "argument" has been pretty pointless. I think it all comes down to me being ignorant.... but who wasn't being ignorant in the G60 thread? And by the way, at the last second I cancled getting the G60. Seems like nobody likes it. I'm going with a simpler approach.
