I work at a credit Point-Of-Sale help desk and this brought a big smile to my face. Love the part where he tried "Granpa Joey" as a name.

Steam is really desperate to make examples of people and shut down their accounts. I will not buy any of their products, because of the ridiculous chances of my money going to waste as I get irrevocably banned.

If this person was trying to buy something with stolen credit card information then he is lucky that he only loses his account...is there instances where people have been banned without justification?

I don't know, but that's not the point. The idea that the people at Valve can remotely stop my software from working when I try to play single player on my machine really disturbs me. Just because they havn't abused their power yet, doesn't make it right for them to have this power.

That's one of the most ridiculous things I've heard. They made the game, they can do whatever they want with it. You agreed to the terms, so if you break them, you'll pay the price, as simple as that...
rio
That's my point: I'm not agreeing to those terms. Ergo, I'm not buying the game.

I bought tribes 2 and my computer got a sick virus and I never got to unistall it correctly. So I tried putting it back on when the computer was rebuilt and it said I couldn't because I had it on another computer. Thats bullshit.

i think it is unfair to restrict usage of a game once the developer goes out of business. in the case of valve, i dont see any real issue with that based on the profit associated with their last 2 games. if they were ever on the brink of bankrupcy, i would hope they would have the decency to release a patch which allowed the game to run without the then extinct valve server.

as for totally owning a game once you have it, i agree as well. i mean, if you have been driving your car for 5 years, then the company flops, the car doest just lose the ability to function. you would seek service from thrid party garages, but the vehicle itself would retain its original functionality. to be able to manipulate a product that someone has already paid for shouldnt be tolerated.
idiot
well, it's the solution that valve came up with to combat piracy.

The solution is to make a better product. Even though the original Doom was pirated far and wide, the id guys still got rich because it was such an amazing game that it sold record numbers of copies anyway.

i don't think so, making a better product will just make more people pirate it huh.gif

If the product is shit, I'll pirate it, because its not worthy of my money. If its good I buy it. I do it for music, games, programs, anything. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way.

I think you overestimate how many people actually pirate these games. Valve is trying to stop ALL piracy, which ends up making the game a pain in the ass to install and use. If Valve just tried to stop most piracy, like they did with Halflife1, then that would be good enough. For people in my position, where I have a steady income and dont want to blow hours searching the internet, it's just not worth my time to try to pirate games. The most people who are pirating these games are people who cannot afford to buy them. But now that Valve is trying to say "no piracy, at all, ever", it interferes with the game itself, and makes me reluctant to actually go and purchase it, due to the risk that Valve could decide that I am not allowed to play it anymore.
