Congress wants to make it illegal for you to fastforward the commercials and previews on a DVD (or any motion picture even). this gets a big fucking WTF from me. if i bought a fucking DVD.. then i should be able to watch/not watch WHAT i want WHEN i want. holy fucking stupid Congress. so basically.. if you tape or capture a tv show.. and you fastforward, you're breaking the law!

The bill would also permit people to use technology to skip objectionable content -- like a gory or sexually explicit scene -- in films, a right that consumers already have. However, under the proposed language, viewers would not be allowed to use software or devices to skip commericals or promotional announcements "that would otherwise be performed or displayed before, during or after the performance of the motion picture," like the previews on a DVD.
idiot
man that is so gay but who cares, nobody will know you skipped the commercials unless you watched the dvd with a fbi agent or something.

What next? Will they make it illegal for you to turn your tv channel or walk out the room when a commercial airs? Will you now be forced to read your spam before deleting?

Like my grandma says "The older you get the dumber you get". This being applied to congress.
PAULIE_D
And they call this a democracy. rolleyes.gif

Thank god I don't live in that country .

It's the Senate, not the Congress and just because some moron Senator puts forth a retarded bill doesn't mean that the Senate will pass it. You realize how many crazy ass bills get put forth everyday?
the beav
this has to do with the crazy laws pertaining to film, when you buy a dvd, you don't own a copy of the movie you own the right to view the film (by the law of course physically you own a copy), they need to be changed to prevent crap like this

Actually, with the new TVs/DVD players coming out, this law would make it _physically impossible_ to fast forward through commercials. Thanks to the wonders of DRM. It's not just some silly law like "no napping on sundays" like some states have, it's going to be enforced physically by the television sets, DVD players, and computer hardware itself.

There is also a law passed that says that you cannot buy a "broadcast flag free" HD-TV recorder after January 1st, 2005, so buy them now, while they're not still illegal. After Jan 1st, all hardware has to follow the "broadcast flag" which means if a certain movie decides that it doesn't want to be recorded, your hardware won't let you record it.

Welcome to the future, prepare for the worst.

This is ridiculous; if you're paying a monthly fee, or you're buying a DVD, why the hell should you be forced to view advertising? It's the greedy damn corporations overstepping their bounds...
Cyclone
I dunno about you guys, but I don't pay $15-20 for a dvd to watch 10-20 minutes of previews.

I'd rather not watch the previews in movie threatres too if I had a choice but I don't. Movie threatre previews arent THAT bad though. At least those previews are up to date. What if you want to watch and old dvd though and be forced to watch a preview for a movie that came out 4 years ago?

I'll continue to just download movies. biggrin.gif

Amen!

Laff I can just see it now though, the tv that calls the cops on you when you walk away from watching a commercial. Or maybe it'll shock you when you touch the remote trying to change the channel.

Next it'll be if you look at an advert in a magazine or paper it will be illegal to stop looking at it until you have read all the information on it. How funking stupid!? Why do people in power spend so much time on this sorta shit and not on stuff that really needs sorting.

In England there are too many Police Officers patrolling the highways and as our taxes = their wages it's highly annoying! They should be out catching real criminals like the bastards who burn cars on my estate!!! Then again they'll only end up getting more support from the state than they deserve or any other law abiding citizen gets!
