Whats the needle under the tach on the X5 labeled "40 30 20 10 0" for?

I was riding in one and it made absolutely no sense to me. It bothered me because it was in the 5 Series I was riding in too.

It's a fuel mileage gauge...it shows immediate fuel mileage.

Personally, I hate the damn thing because it dances around like crazy and immediate fuel mileage is the most worthless measurement ever used in a car.
White RSX
That would make sense why it rests near 40, then under acceleration heads to 0.

Our S40 has instantaneous mileage as well as average mileage. It's kinda interesting to see what kind of mileage you get while cruising at a given speed but not really worth anything.
PBB
The 2004+ International semis measure instantaneous mileage.
It's usually ~6-10mpg X.gif

I've seen the S40 computer...it's better because it's a digital readout, and you can change it to average mileage, as well as 'miles to empty' and other useful things. Having a needle devoted ONLY to instantaneous mileage is stupid.

My dad's S80 has that same computer thing. It's fun.
porschedream
Fuel mileage gauge, basically how many miles or km's you can go and how much gas you're wasting.
porschedream
And yes, it's instananetous mielage, when you rev the engine the needle will move drastically.

Mr b00st
it's a vacuum gauge related to fuel mileage. Highly inaccurate.
Viper007Bond
Still cool.

BMWs have had instantaneous mileage needles since the 80's (I know that E30s have them) and since the 90s most (it was an option on E36 (92-98) 3 series) have had an on-board computer that would tell you things like distance to empty, average mileage and such.
