So Wednesday was my 20th birthday, so I got this as a b-day present from my dad:

Mmm, sex, a 128 MB ATi Radeon 9800 Pro. Much better than my old 64 MB nVidia GeForce 4 TI 4200. And yeah, yeah, yeah, there are better cards out there, but I don't have $400 to blow on a video card and nor does he.

Not to mention that he also got picked up a 250 GB Maxtor SATA hard drive for me for $160. thumbs_up.gif cool.gif If I decide to build a new computer next month, (seeing if he wants to buy this one off me or not as it's still a kick ass computer, but hard to upgrade as it's a Dell), then that'll go in that.

Anyway, 'twas a good day. cool.gif
fallon
its no x800 XT but still a great card, i've the 9700 pro
Viper007Bond
Okay, so I said while I was at it, I might as well get a new computer as I'm running that 9800 Pro on a 250W PSU which isn't really good. Here's the specs & NewEgg links:
TOTAL: $1495.98
(It's gonna be a little cheaper than that for me as my dad is buying this computer off me and my sister is buying this monitor and speakers off me. Probably gonna cost me around $1000.00.)

Ow... Oh well, it'll be worth it. cool.gif thumbs_up.gif
BlackJack
nice vid card, beats mine to hell dry.gif

im also building my dad a computer for his new office and all were from newegg.com also.
almost $1k! whew, and there were no monitor, keyboard, vid card, and mouse included cause he already has some at the office.
crimsonkarter21
and I thought a box of condoms for my 20th was good.....

too late dad!!!
mogulmonster
That's going to be a very fast and very stable machine. Great choices.

For the case, go to Fry's. Pick up the Antec Sonata for $90- $30 MIR. smile.gif Then, you can return that PSU, and save a little more.
Viper007Bond
Nah, not worth driving 45-60 minutes each way for a case.

Decided to just get this one: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc....-156-126&DEPA=1

It's not my favorite looking case, but it's aluminum and has 5 fans, so it will do. smile.gif
Jadan2151
use pricewatch.com they find a lot cheaper prices than newegg. unless u are committed to newegg, your throwing away good money.

P.S. my brother jut boght a 9700 SE and soft-modded it to the performance of the 9800 xt saved him like 150 dollars

You guys know way to much about computers.

You guys know way to much about computers.

thats what i was thinking. laugh.gif How much does it run to build a computer that can do just about evrything without falling on its face?
Jadan2151
um mine cost about 900 and i can run practically any game at a desired resolution.

next big step is overclocking my cpu. my firend is experimenting with liquid nitrogen colling system rather than water cooled. im waiting for him then i can overclock my cpu from 2.8 (stock) to about 3.9 - 4.5ghz.
fallon
yeah, you can build a nice rig for 900~
AXIS.PVAG
If I were to contract someone to build me one, who would I talk to? Can I go to like compUSA or some store like that? I bought a laptop for my trip but this thing farts every now and then...I guess too many videos, games and documents on it????????
fallon
not sure about the contracting part, i pretty much ordered the seperate peices and peiced mine together myself (its really quite easy actually).

you might give compusa a shot though. there are quite a few custom computer companies out there which might be of use (www.ibuypower.com , www.cyberpowerinc.com , www.prostargaming.com , etc) there is also www.falconnorthwest.com, they make extremely nice machines, but they have prices to match. same goes with www.alienware.com

The only problem i have is I know squat about computers yet let alone put one together...I work on cars and airplanes......thats it. head.gif

Dude! Get a Dell. I'm not kidding, either.

Click

This one I configured is a great machine for <$2k, and can be a lot cheaper if you go CRT or with a smaller LCD. You would probably want to upgrade the video, though.

I've got the 9800 non pro 128mb and I haven't been dissapointed. If you ask w hy not pro, I was building the computer around when it was $300 or so, and not wanting to spend $400 at the time for the pro, I chose non pro.

I've got the P4P800 Deluxe too, not the -E model though. I'm running a 2.8C and Corsair XMS 2-2-2 sticks of memory. As for power supply and case, I bought the Antec Sonata, so it came with an Antec True 380W.

Great minds do buy alike! biggrin.gif

Put it together on Friday as that's when my new drive arrived. Decided to ditch my old 80 GB IDE and ordered a 74 GB WD Raptor 10,000 RPM SATA for use as my primary. Sucker is fucking FAST. Really improves load times.

Anyway, even though it's not the best system in the world specs wise, everything in it is FAST and I can actually manage to run Doom3 at 1600x1200 on Ultra settings. laugh.gif (Only get 20-30 fps though.) Highest I've gotten in 3DMark2k3 is 5845 - working on getting that higher.

4 new Cooler Master fans with orange LEDs arrive Monday for it to replace 2 on the case already and go in another 2 slots that currently have no fans in them. Keeping the side fan as it's cool in the dark - has a red, a orange, and a yellow LED in it.

Pics will come when I've got it complete finished.

On a side note, I'll be renting out my subwoofer for use as a jackhammer. laugh.gif Thing is freaking nuts. thumbs_up.gif whistle.gif

my comp is fine.

2x 120gb hard drive
p4 3.0ghz processor
512ddram - NEED TO UPGRADE FOR HL2 when it conmes out (does doom 3 ok)
128mb ti4200 - NEED TO UPGRADE FOR DOOM3 and HL2, but im gonna wait till the new pci express vid cards come out cos the agp ones will get really cheap
5.1 surround sound
17" BENQ lcd screen

and the 9800pro is a damn good card - but not as good as the x800 xt
BankieVR6
yea, i just picked up a 9800 pro 256mb for my new system, and it sbeen working great. with a similar system to what viper built, cept an amd 64 3400+, ive been benching 3dm2k3 at around 6200 and running doom at 1280 on high settings at a smooth 40-50fps. works for me! and i can overclock the pro to about 405/360 from 378/338.
Cyclone
goldenjackal
Just chiming in to say that it cost me around $800 to build my comp
2100+ @ 2.0ghz
random NF2 mobo
Western Digital 120gb hdd
dvd drive
cd-rw drive
radeon 9500 pro
1Gb pc2700

and it will run doom 3 at 1024x768 at high quality all day long.

See if you can do that with a dell.

(It's gonna be a little cheaper than that for me as my dad is buying this computer off me and my sister is buying this monitor and speakers off me. Probably gonna cost me around $1000.00 -- hopefully :?)

I'll post pictures after I install my new fans which should arrive today. biggrin.gif
White RSX
Hampster: $13
Potato: $.75
Glass Of Water: Free

Building an Eco-Friendly computer until the hampster dies: An incredibly stupid idea.

Ah, so that's what the H in Hz stand for...

Viper007Bond
Yeah, so I got the orange fans, didn't like them and returned them. Gonna get blood red ones as soon as they are back in stock. Pictures once I get those and have them installed.

On a side note, picked up one of these suckers for my video card:

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc....-186-110&depa=0

The original 9800 Pro fan is too damn loud. dry.gif

I also got one of these:
