Give a little more definition to the term "starter car"

I voted for the Mazdaspeed Protegé because it takes a car I love and gives it some serious oomph.
Starter car?
As is "What could would you want your kid to start driving in?"
Any Saturn.

Sorry about that. When i mean Starter car i mean first car or first car you would buy to modify.

ohhh, I see...well, I wouldn't buy the Protegé to modify it; I like it stock. The car I would plan to buy to modify it would be my own (VW GTI 1.8T)
First car to buy to modify?

Maybe i should alter the definition a little more. If you were a teenager and you needed a starter car for under 30 grand canadian that you would keep and modify which would it be? Not a car to get you from point A to be and maybe if you're lucky from point B back to point A.

Well the Proteges are Mazda 3's now..
I voted for MazdaSpeed Protege.. but my vote would be Mazda 3 Sedan

If I were buying something to modify it'd have to be RWD and posess 8 cylinders. More than likely it'd be a Mid 90's Camaro that would be the one I could afford, with some money left over to really get it goin.

I guess teenagers these days are richer than I thought (unless mom & dad are footing the bill). I would think that a $10 grand limit would be more appropriate for a first car for a teenager, (which would limit them to the used car market).

None of those are really appealing to me.
I voted for the Sentra SE-R, because this poll is asking what car would I buy to modify, and I figure that if I had the SE-R, there is a lot of room for improvement with that car.
Also, isn't this thread in the wrong forum?

If I actually wanted to modify car I would probably choose the sentra, for a good 'starters block' but few of those are what people would call starters cars....
Mmmmm...Mitsubishi Lancer.....
And yes, this topic is in the wrong forum...

Of those, I would get the Protege, and leave it stock. If I was modifying, I would pick up an early 90's 5.0 coupe.

are we talking brand new here or used?
if its brand new then something like the gti would be very nice
if were talking used, i would love to have something like an e30 325i 5 speed, or for considerably more money and e30 m3

but of course the
ULTIMATE starter car is a 1991 Toyota Corolla Wagon with a 3 speed Automatic!
