My best friend's got $35k to spend a new (or used) car, and isn't sure what to get. The obvious options to us were the Honda S2000, or a Cayman S (perhaps with financing). Other cars he's strongly considering are the E55 AMG and an Audi A8 4.2. He's kind of split between getting a sportscar or a luxury sports sedan. Oh, and no R32 or S4 suggestions...if he's going to have something with more than two seats, he wants it to be big.

Cayman normale if he can't afford the S...blows the rest out of the water imho.

I told him to go for the S2k. Whatever car he gets, he plans to own for the next few years. My Porsche-owning friends aren't exactly thrilled with the repair bills...
He does like the Cayman though, and he's willing to stretch his budget to accommodate the S.

Cayman repair bills are scary, and hes considering an A8?
Heres the bottom line to remember when buying used high end cars. Even if you buy an 80k dollar car thats depreciated to 20, its parts brand new still cost like 80k.... Whats that mean? new Accord pricing with new S class repair bills. Have fun.
Oh, and if you search hard enough, a good Cayman S can be had for the 35-40k range and still be withing warranty.

A8 4.2 is pretty slow, E55 or E39 M5 all the way

I agree with Duke on the Vette... it may not be as refined as the cayman, but the sound of the LSx engine is seks... plus they are reliable and inexpensive to fix.

He'd rather not put up with the repair bills, but it isn't like he can't afford them. He had an S600 when we were in high school, and later owned a Jag XJ, right now his garage consists of a Crossfire and a Ducati of some sort.
The 'Vettes a good suggestion we overlooked, I'll pass it by him. Is the E39 M5 available in the price range? I suggested that as a compromise between the luxo-barges, and the sportscars, but says he can't find one for the price.
Aircooled, the 335 is too small. I know that sounds funny, but his logic is, if he's buying a four-door it's to chauffeur around his parents when they visit. So if he's going to have something with four-seats and four-doors, he wants it to be nice and roomy.

E39 M5
0-60 in 5.1, screaming V8, perfectly balanced chasis, tons of mods out there

I can see the end of this thread already, he'll buy a 2003 Ford Thunderbird.

+1, however i wonder what replacement parts on the E39 V8 would be - not like it was in tons of platforms, lol.
I love vettes, they are awesome. I'd never own one as my main car though, drove a 99 FRC and a 08 Z51 and they are impressive especially (mainly) in handling. But it's not a great place to be, screw aesthetics i mean just the feel/space/heat/shifter i dunno. A Cayman S would be so much sex, but likely expensive as hell.

The problem being with the E39.....repairs are expensive as fuck. Google 'E39 problems' and have fun.

Humorously there's fewer hits than "s2000 problems", "cayman problems", "corvette problems" , "A8 problems" , "mercedes e55 problems"

There are also many, many fewer E39 M5s/E39 M5 owners out there than S2000s, Caymans, Vettes, A8s, and E55s....
...but still relatively humorous.

I think Honda S2000 is the good choice for purchasing.. Its give the good mileage, its design is good and also performance is better than others. But it is also depend on the maintenance of the car..

He got it dirt cheap, but it's completely clean. The car is completely stock in terms of, well everything other than appearance. Just a bit ricey with the bodykit and rims...which he plans to remedy. Oh, and he thinks the tires are entirely too wide for the application.

EDIT: 2005, 45k miles, Honda CPO for another year and a half.
