BMW's always said they'd never build a front-wheel-drive car or platform prostitute a BMW off the MINI platform. Now, according to Car Magazine, BMW's apparently reversed themselves on both, greenlighting a MINI-derived "0-Series" lineup that'll go on sale in 2013.

What we know so far is this new "0-Series," dubbed UKL1, for Untere Kompaktklasse (lower compact class), is designed to go head-to-head with the new Audi A1 and the Mercedes A-Class and be based oin the third-generation MINI. The "0-Series" will supposedly come in three different body styles: a three-door hatch, five-door hatch and a two-seat roadster.

Under the hood will be brand-spankin' new three- and four-cylinder engined and may even be built in Oxford on the same assembly lines as the MINI.

I really don't see HOW BMW could possibly do this? This is like Subaru making their next Impreza FWD with an I4.... WHAT

This simply won't happen. CAR is way off the mark.

As a brand that is hanging on by its prestige, they can't afford to do this.

I stopped caring about BMW a while back, so I could care less if it happened. It just doesn't make any sense. Plus it won't be the first time CAR has come up with some utterly bullshit rumor based on "reliable sources."

BMW just wants to sell more cars...

What's the problem?

Personally, I think if BMW wanted to go FWD they would've done so with the 1-series. In Europe it's meant to battle it out with the Golf, but because of it being the RWD, the packaging is hopeless rendering it nothing but a niche competitor. If they wouldn't back down from the whole RWD thing then, why now?

Also, if BMW wanted to start building, FWD compacts, why wouldn't they just exploit the Mini brand? I mean they have it in their portfolio already. So this whole 0-series thing just doesn't make sense to me.
