I just watched this movie/documentary called Earthlings. And it blew my mind.
It's basically a documentary about humans cruel and absolutely inhumane treatment of animals. Let me just say that I'm not some 'eco hippy' or green peace activist, but I do love animals a whole lot. And let me also add that I love eating a good steak and chicken casserole, but man will this movie mess with your head. It looks at animals in various 'sectors' from food to fur to entertainment, and how they are treated in each of these cases, and its fucking disgiusting. The visuals that you see will really change the way you think about your food. I'm reconsidering a lot of my life choices right now; I did just watch it, so it might just be fresh in my head, but it will make you think hard about certain things.

Go on to youtube and check it out. On youtube it's broken up into about 10 10minute segments(although I'm sure you can find the full length movie somewhere). It's crazy what humans do to other living creatures, and not just for food, also for the sole, sick purpose of entertainment.

If anyone has seen it or is going to watch it, please share your feelings on it, 'cause it really really really moved me, and I juts want to know what others think...

I think one of the worst things I've seen so far in regards to the food industry was the chick farming/egg laying operation or some such. Basically, they round up all the baby male chicks, put them in a clear box, seal it and aphyixsate them to death cause they have no use for them. It's supposedly the most humane method of doing this, I guess.

The full length movie is there to be watched. Watch it. You think the chicken asphyxiation is bad, watch this whole movie and you'll see a LOT of fucked up things that humans do to animals. It really is about as messed up as it gets, but I do think it's something that people need to see and be made aware of.

I dont really know what to think. I watched until the dog got smashed in the back on the garbage truck. Some of these things take place in other cultures. If you follow the narrator, intervening on their way of life or practices, just because we dont agree with them, puts us at odds with our other human "earthlings" . What gives us the right to do that if the video preaches not to do it with animals.

On the flip side, im sure they show the over crowding and "inhumane ways" we slaughter animals for food. Whats the alternative? Not to eat them? Is there any difference in a pig getting its throat slit and a wild hog being EATEN ALIVE by another animal? Both are gruesome, but imagine the world this way. Humans are omnivores as a fact. With the number of people we have on earth today, imagine if we all left our offices for lunch and ran out into the streets, chasing pigs or cattle and killing them right there in the street. Or worse yet, not killing them, just immobilizing them for a snack.... I dont know about you, but to me i dont think that one is better than the other for a pig or a cow or whatever.

maybe this is how we should be doing it, no?

As for pets, i'll agree, we are horrible. People who can have a pet for years then throw it out on the street are just something that i can never understand. All of our pets came from shelters, two dogs and two cats. One a purebred great dane.

Couldn't watch past the dog being dumped in the dump truck.

It's so fucking inhumane and cruel. How we humans treat pets. I of course treat them with love and respect, but how the shelters treat them is cruel and stupid.

mrlexmark
That was difficult to watch.

I don't think the video is preaching not to eat meat or chicken or whatever. The video is (in my eyes) a very straight forward portrayal of how fucked up human beings actually are. There are most definitely alternatives to the heavily overcrowded/inhumane treatment of animals in the slaughter houses, breeding farms, etc. The video just shows how corporate profit far outways ANY sort of consideration for what humans consider to be 'lesser beings'.

My girlfriend visited a milkfarm a few years back and the way they do it is to alternate the animals. So they'll impregnate one cow, let her go through her gestation period and 'harvest' milk from her, and once she's given birth, they alternate and put another cow in her place, and let the first cow 'rest' for those months. In that video they keep the cows pregnant constantly, till they have no more life left and die. Then they replace them. It's sick.

In the video (further down) they show medical testing. They show how pigs get tied down , and without any sort of anasthetic, they roast the side of the pig with a flame thrower (a big fuckin flame thrower) till it's skin is literally blistering and coming off. All this for the sake of 'medical testing'. And people wil say rather that and let the pig suffer for the sake of the humans, but FUCK THAT. Watch the pig being flamed and fuckin tortured, and people will start to think differently. It's fuckin gross.

As for the pets, I feel for the shelters. They do mention in the video that the resaon they 'mass kill' them like in the gas chambers is because there are just too many strays and they can't afford to put them all down with the injection.

One of the hardest parts to watch in that movie is the training of animals for circuses. It really shows the full extent of the disgusting, cruel, inhumane way that humans treat animals for our own ENTERTAINMENT! The worst is the way they treat elephants. I actually cried during that part of the video. You cannot believe how fucked up it actually is.

They show how a fox gets SKINNED ALIVE for the sake of a fuckin fur coat. It's seeing things like this that makes me realise why animal rights activists behave as extremely as they do, and it's fully justified.

So you would consider animals to be at the same level as humans?

...so you consider us to be superior beings thus allowing us to treat them however we want because, after all, we're humans? The way we treat other species speaks volumes of one's character and what kind of "human" they are.

Seriously, first the "Ann Coulter has great opinions and she's great" comment and now this. Fuck you, you stupid kid. Go back to shaving kittens, dousing it in gasoline, lighting it on fire, and throwing it out the window of a car on the highway. Yes, this happened and I bet you had a great LOL just reading about it.

I watched it. It's bullshit. The whole thing is based on the premise that humans should hold the rest of the earth to the standards that we hold ourselves. All sorts of gruesome stuff goes down naturally without human intervention. Just because humans have developed a set of standards to derive what is 'humane' treatment of each other doesn't mean that the rest of the world is going to follow. I'm not saying that I enjoy the idea of roasting a pig alive, but there is no natural system that I can think of which would forgo the benefits (if they were to have any, say, medical advancement) for the sake of the pig itself. Besides, the film itself is hugely biased. It's a single step up from those crazies who want to try wild animals for murder. No one who understands how the world actually works (anyone who has gotten their food from somewhere other than a supermarket) would buy this shit. They should take all PETA reps and drop them into the African bush for a week. Let's see if they still make their ridiculous demands about animal treatment after they see how animals treat each other.

"Do you know what they do to those cows?"

"No, but it's delicious"
OHirtenfelder
You're missing the fuckin point. Does a lion go to a gazelle and tell it: I will start cutting you slowly, and make a fire under yor ass, until you dance the way I want you to dance. NO. A lion kills a fuckin gazelle because it's hungry. I have seen, in front of me, Lions starting to eat screaming baby gazelles while they're still alive. It sucked to see the suffering, but oh well, it's the natural order of things. A fox having it's entire skin/fur coat ripped off its body while alive for some fat fuckin society bitch to wear what is considered a 'classy' item of clothing is just downright fucked up. Full stop.

And yes, humans are higher up the food chain, and must kill 'lower order' animals to survive, and that's fine. It's always been like that, humans have always overpowered and eaten other animals for food and clothing; it's how it is done in this video that's fucked up. I'm all for eating steak and a delicious shepherds pie. It's the unnecessary and intentional cruelty to these animals that disgusts me.

4wheelfreak, you watched it. Give me one single justifiable reason for the treatment of those elephants in the circus? Just one reason why it is OK, or right for us to do that to other animals? There are none. If you wanna see elephants, come to Africa, go to the Kruger Park, and watch them in the natural environment. That circus training is bullshit.
Are you really comparing how animals treat each other with the way humans treat each other? Really?

And then the elephant, which has the capability to overpower the humans, actually retaliates, and then gets shot over and over to kill it, because it's a threat. Fuck that. I'm sorry, I just do not see ANY sort or logic in that.
Altostratus
well you South Africans have a pretty terrible track record on the human rights side of things, so... I don't really see why you care so much about puppies.
OHirtenfelder
Do I look like Hendrik Verwoerd?
I had nothing to do with Apartheid, and feel no guilt for it whatsoever. It happened at the hand of other people, not me.
Are you really such an ignorant bastard that you cannot see how fucked up this is? Or is all you're trying to do is be Mr. fuckin controversial and stir shit again, as always?
If you have nothing positive to add to a thread, fuck off. It's pretty simple to understand. Or better yet, tell everyone how you're going to leave, because like a little bitch you're worried that your girlfriend (boyfriend ?) is going to get upset with you for being on the computer too much, and leave. And then don't come back. Even better.

That meat doesn't just end up in your kitchen.

Any good chef should understand the process of raising the animal, feeding it and treating it up to the point of butcher and how it finally ends up wrapped in butcher's paper and on your stainless steel prep table in the kitchen of a Denny's at 2am during the nightshift. tongue.gif

Denny's is overrated.
