QUOTE
After months of speculation and spy shots the crew at Maranello have finally revealed their new mid-engined V8 powered creation to replace the F430. The all-new 458 Italia won't be shown in public until September's Frankfurt Motor Show the details were released early this morning. A new direct-injected 4.5-liter V8 ups the power ante it 570 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. Eighty percent of that torque is now available at an impressively low 3,250 rpm, thanks probably in part to the 12.5:1 compression ratio.

Like last years California convertible, the 458 gets a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox to send power to the rear axle. A lot of work on reducing the internal friction of the powerplant in addition to reduced aerodynamic drag also helps improve the 458s mileage to a combined 17.1 mpg (US) on the EU test cycle. No mention is made so far of incorporating any type of KERS hybrid system which has been rumored. That may come at a later date.

Like its predecessor the the structure is fabricated out of aluminum giving the 458 a dry weight of just 3,042 pounds. This is after a Ferrari so talk of fuel consumption really does seem pointless. The real question is how quick is it? Based on specs at least, this new coupe does not disappoint. Acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 3.4 seconds and this is the first production Ferrari V8 to top the 200 mph barrier, now getting to 202 mph.

Absolutely incredible.

It's a good looker. I'm not quite convinced by the rear end, especially the 3 tailpipes, but the front and profile views look gorgeous.
duality
lol i just saw it on autocar.

its sexy looking thats for sure...low, butch, modern. but those 3 exhausts pipes don't tickle my fancy tbh.

Best a/c vents ever.
Razor
Three? What the hell?
Bjorn
I don't like it. The design is too fussy, and doesn't feel cohesive.

a la f40. doesn't fit here.

Really? I think it makes the Gallardo look like a brick.
Bjorn
^maybe I spoke too quickly...the more I look at it the more I stop being weirded out by it. It is definitely not instantly beautiful, like the F430 or LP560-4, but, triple exhaust tips aside, it isn't ugly.
Razor
I've decided that they tried to remake the Enzo and mix it with the rear of the F40 to make something that's pretty much bleh.gif

you can't be serious. the Gallardo is one of the sexiest cars out there...its just so sleek, sinister and composed. this looks good, but feels all over the place...the design cues aren't smooth imo. not saying it looks bad...but < Gallardo.

I'm with Bjorn on this one. It's got no unity in it's design. The Gallardo is a brick and prowd of it. This thing doesn't know what it is.
Dr. Strangelove
I thought these are third party renders. I don't think Ferrari would release a car in this manner.
moe
Sexy as the Gallardo is, I just think this is much cooler in every conceivable way.

Videos with sound here...

The rear 3/4 view makes it look alien.
Diesel
you guys all fail. this is Ferrari getting back to sexy with swooping lines and nice proportions. i'm in love! this is seriously the best looking ferrari in decades!
Aircooled
Hmm, that's an interestingly large number gap between hp and torque ratings.

Not particularly. Take one more look at that tach for your explanation.
Dr. Strangelove
I think the car is beautiful. I've been waiting for the Ferrari's that are born out of their new design philosophy, and I'm not disappointed. Can't wait to see one in person.

Agreed.

I don't mind those 3 exhausts at all.

Ah, so, basically what you're saying is that Ferrari tried to make a car based on a Ferrari and another Ferrari?

And this some how makes it revolting?

For the record the car is gorgeous and it just exudes the whole Ferrari DNA from every angle. I don't know why people are so confused by the 3 exhausts? Hell, the Murcielago LP640 doesn't even have an exhaust. It just has a big gaping black asshole. The Zonda has 4 exhausts. And, like people have already mentioned, Ferrari already did 3 exhausts with the F40.
Dr. Strangelove
Could be wrong, but I thought the F40 had three because it had one for each exhaust bank, and an open waste gate.
tune
I'm not confused by 3 exhausts, I just don't like it and didn't like it before. The Murcielago actually has 2 exhausts that sit just behind the big hole, although that's not really what you're getting at.

Anyone else noticed on the tach that after 8 000, it's still 8 000 ?! vtak mode ?
Halflifehavock13
At first, I thought it looked mediocre. I didnt like it as much as the f430 because of the added air vents/slits. But over the course of a short period of time, it's now my favorite looking ferrari since the F355. The fact that they managed to integrate those oddly placed vents and aerodynamics without tainting the looks just makes it all the more beautiful.

My thoughts exactly. thumbs_up.gif

Never mind about the front looking good:

It might grow on me but for now...nah
Bjorn
I would be interested in reading some early thoughts on the design of the 360. For 1998 (when I assume the first press photos surfaced) it probably looked pretty alien too.

I remember it being hated on, but then everyone warmed up to it. I still think the 458 look badass as hell.
SwissWhiskey
458 is as badass as it gets, no question about it. Especially the back and from the side.

Its just when the Murci SV and the new Gallardo came out I liked it the first second I saw it.

The California grew on me in a minute and the 599 was the same. Off-course everything on the front is purposely styled like that. Its just going to take time to get used to. Something I noticed though is pininfarina's designs keep on looking good even after some years. The 360 still looks excellent. The other day I had a F430 I was shooting by chance next to a brand new lp560 Gallardo, and the F430 still looked just as good.
Bjorn
I still haven't warmed up to the 599 head on, still has a goofy grin which ruins it for me.
Halflifehavock13
That head on shot makes it look like a peugeot.
clarkma5
I dunno why people say this is the prettiest ferrari in a long time, I think it's actually pretty ugly.

And the interior is another in a string of over-the-top Ferrari ridiculousness. My opinion has still not changed: Ferrari lost me after the 360 died.

Phix
Somebody get me some new pants... that interior... holy shit....No other car will ever do it for me again.
Aircooled
I'm thinking it is a pretty awesome interior. Is the speedometer next to the gas gauge?
clarkma5
Yeah looks like the speedo is a small digital gauge tucked down next to the fuel gauge, under the battery voltage. Seems a less-than-intelligent place to stick it.
infinity
The more I see of this car, the more I love it. My favorite Ferrari since the 355 for sure.
Bjorn
I think the car takes a page from the Mercedes S Class's book and has a few ways the speedo can be read. One of the pictures above shows it being on the right side of the tach, where the media menu is on the more recent pictures.

I agree with clark though, the interior is a tragedy. The outside is slowly growing on me, more so as I see pictures of the car in the real world, which gives some perspective on size...but it's definitely strange. It seems to have more in common with the modern interpretation of the P4 pininfarina did a couple years back than any other Ferrari though.
Phix
Yeah, the digital displays are programmable.
DB9
I think the one next to the gas guage is probably a trip meter or something. I doubt they'd stick a speedometer in that tiny little space.
Bjorn
^If you look closely at the picture I reposted, it looks like a readout of how many Km's you can travel on your current tank of fuel...um...I guess that can also be called range.
moe
I'm really feelin the interior. Sure it looks all techy, but it's also really simple at the same time. I don't see any unnecessary junk.

There are some cool things about it, but I sure as hell wouldn't call it simple. On the contrary, I'd say its too complicated.
Synesthesia
It's growing on me, though I certainly don't love it. The way the spoiler is integrated with the rest of the car is really nice.
