Maybe GM wouldn't be in QUITE as bad a shape now if they hadn't wasted the money developing/making these cars in the first place...
The Pontiac is questionable at best, but with the STS-V, GM knew they wouldn't make any money. From what I've read, it was supposed to be a brand-builder for the V performance line. To its credit, it helped sell a lot of GM aftermarket bits. Just as many Merc/BMW owners like to make their cars look like AMG/M-division cars, many STS owners wanted to the V-look. Also, like I said before, it helped build the V performance range's rep. It wasn't up to the level of the M5, but a good car in its own right.
The Impala SS has also proved popular, and from what I know, while a lot of divisions have been loss-making. Chevy has been quietly going about its business raking in some profits with their vanilla line-up (much of it from fleet sales).
The Cobalt SS is a good car, period.
