The Golf is a remarkable car. Six generations on, it is still the closest thing we have to government-issue personal transport. Everyone looks acceptable in a Golf, regardless of age, race and blah blah blah. It is truly multi-denominational. It may also be this thing we call "classless". I've never been totally convinced by the argument for classlessness, because venereal disease is classless and so are landmines. But the fact is that toffs drive Golfs and so do the oiks, and no one knows which one you are. The only other car that enjoys this distinction is the Subaru Legacy. So if you have one of those, well done. That was the second-best car you could have bought, after the Golf.
