Full Version: What American circuit?
Dieselstation Car Forums > Parking Lot > Motorsport
Dr. Strangelove
OK so Bernie said he wants F1 back in America, but the only places he sees as possible locations are Indy or New York. I assume he wants to keep it East coast because of the time zone thing. I was watching a race at Virginia International Raceway on TV today and thought it was a really neat circuit. Assuming the circuit could be built up to FIA standards, what would be your ideal location for the USGP?

Personally I would love to see a street race on Manhattan Island or on the Las Vegas strip. Times Square hairpin anyone?
duality
street race circuit would be fantastic.

NY + night Vegas would be so amazing.
Uwe
Either the Glen or Road America.
clarkma5
Not another street circuit...

Road Atlanta would be really cool. Watkins Glen is too damned short IMO, though Road America is a pretty awesome choice. Laguna Seca's too tight for F1 cars but Sears Point could be really interesting.

I love street circuits. I'm down for NY.
Phix
As long as it's not based off a stupid oval it's all good. They used to race around the streets of Las Vegas and Detroit back in the day.

Of course, you could always build a whole new track?
clarkma5
I'll design the new track! It'll be 84 miles long and have 374 corners. I will call it the Clarkenring and it'll be in the rocky mountains. The race will take 3 laps to complete, two of which will be done under safety car period.
Bjorn
I would love a race at Road America, mostly because it's a twelve hour drive from my house. (Montreal was a 24 hour drive at least).

Can it have a loop and jump?
clarkma5
Just one of each? That's not very xtreme.

thats why we need real-life trackmania nations

Basically I want F1 to look like Speed Racer.

LAGUNA SECA

Ever been to Laguna Seca? There's no way they'd run a grand prix there, it is not up to the standards of an F1 circuit. It's too tight and has really outdated safety measures, the pits are pretty tiny, and the access is poor. Even the grandstands are cheap as hell. It would require significant upgrades that would drastically alter the character of the track for the worse to make it ready for F1, so I didn't even suggest it.
Benny
it would be suicide to do a grand prix at laguna seca. imagine the pack all breaking into the corkscrew, death.
Bjorn
^I'm not even sure an F1 car could do the corkscrew. It's pretty steep from what I gather from pictures, movies and games.
Uwe
If an F1 car could do the Nordschleife - Nick Heidfeld in the BMW-Sauber - it can do the corkscrew.
Bjorn
Maybe it's just because I can't picture it (which is a pretty silly reason).

And BMW' F1 doing the 'ring....most disappointing thing ever.
clarkma5
BMW had to specially prepare that car just to get around the 'ring and it couldn't even do the karussell. The corkscrew's not quite as aggressive as the karussell but it's pretty close.

New Jerser Motorsports Park..... new track in NJ that would seem sweet for F1. Grand Prix Touring Car has a race race there now.

Road Atlanta, Road America, and Sears Point are awesome choices.

Watkins Glen, and Laguna are no good for F1 IMO.

How about V.I.R anyone?

I will be really excited if F1 comes back to the USA at one of those tracks. Even a road course in NYC would be sweet, but it would murder the city in terms of traffic.
Phix
Uhh, Toyota has already been to Laguna Seca with their F1 car with their former test driver Ricardo Zonta. He actually broke the track record temporaily, too.
clarkma5
Yeah you can drive the car around Laguna Seca, but the facilities are definitely not up to snuff and neither are the safety measures, plus the track's a bit short for F1 cars and I honestly don't see much in the way of good passing areas there.
Phix
I was really responding to leif's post.
Dr. Strangelove
VIR would be sweet, its a little narrow, and the safety isn't there, but damn its a pretty course.
