Ford recalls Taurus, Sable sedans

DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. has recalled more than 1.3 million Taurus and Sable sedans in two separate actions in the United States to fix a faulty brake light and to replace an air filter that can catch fire, the automaker said in letters to safety authorities released on Wednesday.

Ford, the second-largest U.S. automaker, said one of the recalls includes about 938,789 Taurus and Sable cars for the 2000 to 2003 model years to replace the stop lamp switch and associated wiring.

Ford said that a malfunctioning electronic switch may cause stop lamps to become inoperable, or stay on all the time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it has received 61 complaints of the brake lamps failing, including two incidents that resulted in crashes and one that resulted in two injuries. At least 37 of those complaints were addressed as part of a March 2001 recall of 157,000 vehicles.

The second recall involved about 399,926 Taurus and Sable cars from the 2003 model year to replace the air filters that can catch fire. Ford said it received 65 reports of fires under the hood of the cars.

Ford said it will notify owners to take their cars to a dealership, which will fix the problems at no charge.

Last week, the NHTSA said it opened an investigation into the 1999-2002 model year Ford Windstar minivan after receiving 56 complaints that the power sliding door could open when the vehicle is moving.

I've owned 3 Fords... they were all crap.... I tried to buy American... I really did... but they let me down.

I can't tell you how much time my 1996 Mustang GT spent in the shop for recalls and other crap... mad.gif sad.gif

Ford needs to stop using cheap parts made in Taiwan.

My father's "new" Ranger has so many recalls on it, I've lost track. My mother used to buy Exploders too, and it had a similar story.

holycrap. My family used to be a Ford family, now it's just my dad and the Ranger left.

-Jesse <- had an 84 Ford ranger with 248,000 on the ODO, only problem I ever really had with it was the original alternator died... I just left it that way. It'd be fun to drop a rustang motor into it sometime in the future maybe.

My Uncle's Ford Expedition required an engine replacement after only 18,000 kms (about 11,000 miles).

My friends's Mercury Cougar also required an engine replacement immediately after the powertrain warranty expired. dry.gif

Both vehicles had regular maintenance performed and were not driven hard.

Sounds like a serious quality control issue to me.

Yeah, but Consumer Reports says they're good. Don't you guys know anything???!!!?!?!!?

hahaha ... now that's sarcasm !

Good in what ? Initial quality ? That doesn't mean much ....

I'll stick with Honda & Toyota, thank you.

no no, the engines actually made by Ford are the ones that catch fire.

Fords haven't gained a good name in my family. My first car was a Mercury Topaz (Ford Tempo), and it was a pile. I replaced just about everything that bolted on to or fed into the engine before I finally gave it to my brother-in-law. Then, I got an Aerostar from my dad. thumbs_down.gif That was an even bigger PITA. Multiple transmissions (forunately, they were all under warranty after the first, but that means they kept going within a 2 year time span).

Then, I inherited a '92 Crown Vic when I got married. Aside from minor annoyances, that has been a solid car. The electric window cable is broken on the driver's side (wife's fault), the passenger lock (auto) doesn't work, and the heat shield for the cat fell off last summer. Its easy to maintain, though, and it still feels like it could run forever. I sincerely hope it doesn't. I'm tired of having a "Grandma" car, so I keep hoping that the tranny dumps or it does the Ford thing, and starts on fire.

I even left the key in it, with the door unlocked for a few months last summer. Just in case... Of course, with the widow being broken, you can just slide it up and down by hand.

IMO, unless its a classic Mustang, I'll never have Ford on a title again.

lol if you wanan get rid of that Crown Vic, drive it to Atlanta and leave it. I guarantee it will be stolen within 20 minutes if you leave the keys in it because all the rappers and brotha's rap about them and love to put them on 20's and load them with bling accessories like LCD's. That or the Mexicans will make a lowrider out of it.

Georgia really does suck. We have the worst of every race of people here.

You must watch C.O.P.S.

It seems Georgia and Nevada have been hoarding the white trash, to keep the rest of the country fairly safe. smile.gif

You are the fool. You've obviously never ridden in an LT/LS1. Squeak Kings they are.

Yup - the base engine is sourced from the Corolla and the GT model gets the Celica GT-S engine.

technically the V6 in the Vue is the 3.5L from the Pilot, Odyssey, and MDX... but that's just details. Accord is a 3.0L.
