Every year around the 10th of januari, Ferrari kicks off the new F1 season by presenting their new car. As we already saw in testing, the new rules for aerodynamics will change the cars quite a bit. Wider front wing and smaller rear wing takes some getting used to.
Lets use one thread for all presentations...
Now, I present you the Ferrari F60 (yes they changed the naming again)

(Why do almost all F1 websites protect their pictures, it's not as if they took them themselves)
Edit: now with better pic thanks to Autoblog

I think 'winglets' are banned now aren't they? Is that Ferrari being clever/sly by placing the mirror out wide with a stand?

Everything looks OK, except for that little wing at the back, it's almost vestigial looking. (yes I know that's the new regulations).

You mean the guide plate thingies beside the air intakes, don't you? AFAIK they are allowed but they had to be reduced in size compared to those in previous years.

OMG helmet cam in traffic will be amazing!
Marien
Jan 13 2009, 07:20 AM
This helmet cam is probably only for this roll out for Italian TV. Normally the onboard cam is located in the little wing above the air intake. Would be cool though

Those hubcaps really, really annoy me. I don't think I'd be bothered if they didn't have an alloy drawn on...
Lancer007
Jan 13 2009, 03:08 PM
they had helmet cams for the past race of the 08 season. But they were molded in by the mouth part of the helmet for some stupid reason.
Marien
Jan 13 2009, 03:17 PM
Probably because you don't want to modify the part above the head to ensure structural integrity. Modifying the sphere like structure weakens it and makes crack formation easier. And there's probably more space at the chin.
Concerning the hub caps: Almost every team has those non-spinning hub caps. Only Ferrari probably has a deal with BBS as part of their contract so covering them won't make BBS happy. They are ugly as hell though...

People complained about the old mounting position, and I think it was changed. I doubt that Ferrari would run a helmet that was not FIA approved even in testing.

I thought it was just a camera taped/Velcro-ed to the top of his helmet (like you sometimes see in motor cross etc.) But I cannot see it on the youtube footage

The Toyota TF109
I must say a very interesting wing end plate design. Haven't seen these kind of curved plates before.

McLaren is next
Because of the new rules McLaren also features the big front wing and narrow rear wing. But somehow the McLaren looks weird...

What an odd exhaust. I wonder if it's just like that because the engine is out.

Now they're saying that the exhausts on the Ferrari are illegal because it counts as an aero appendage. Also the Williams and Renault have debuted, I just can't find great pics yet

I didn't think Renault's livery could get any worse than last season (although I must admit it grew on me) the new one is hideous though.
New BMW - I'm sure someone will find good photos:

As you wish, sir :-)
The last pic illustrates the rule changes very nicely. You can see how much higher the rear wing is, and how boxy the front is. Also the absence of all the small wings is very noticeable.

Wow it looks like a massive step backwards.
A lot of the manufacturers seem to have the same wing end plate shape - what rule change has made this happen?
infinity
Jan 22 2009, 02:56 PM
I agree it looks like a step backwards, however I'm assuming this was, to a degree, the intention of the FIA in terms of the new regulations.
I, for one, like the "new" look a lot of the cars have. I think I prefer it to the cars of the past few years. They're quite similar in many ways to the cars of the late 90's IMO, which I personally enjoy because that is when I really started watching/getting into F1.
I also really like the Williams interim livery. It would be cool if they kept it all one uniform color like that for the season (although thats not going to happen). I like the overall shape and look of the Williams car best so far too.

The cars do look better than the concept drawings I saw before the end of last season, and I agree with Infinity935, they really remind me of the cars from the late 90's, which is also when I got into F1.
I'm a little worried for Renault. That long high fin coming off the back of their car...it's not a new development...since half of the teams last year were using them. The absence of them on all of the other teams cars tells me that there is some kind of disadvantage to the fin, or at the very least, no advantage...since I'm sure everyone tried them out. Maybe Renault is a casualty of the severe reduction in wind tunnel time the teams had to deal with this year...
On a related note, since there is no in-season testing this year, will the look of the cars stay the same throughout the season?
tune
Jan 23 2009, 06:11 AM
I don't think the cars will stay the same all season - what you will see happen is the teams using Friday Practice as the new in-season testing and a chance to try out new bits.

i also agree that it looks like the cars are simpler looking. Hopefully this will inspire more exciting racing, (more overtaking)

Wow, Red Bull pulls out a really interesting looking car!

Having these big bargeboards at the car Adrian Newey surely must have read the rulebook very thoroughly. I thought they were banned.

Look at the carbon fiber at the bottom of the car, I've never seen such a large weave before.

When are people going to realize, painting something green doesn't do anything except make it ugly?

The green side wall is to see what compound the car is on. Now we are back to slicks, painting a stripe in one of the grooves obviously won't work.

They did the green stripes in Japan, and it was stupid then.
Champ car addressed the same problem in a much better way:
