Just picked this up after ordering it last night (the place I was buying it from had a special offer going on, where they were selling it for $100 less, and as a result never seemed to have them in stock).

First impressions: Well, I've always been the sort that's balked at smartphones, so this is a pretty big change for me. It does...so much. I synced it with my Outlook, and my email, and there's wi-fi, and yeah I love the thing. I also got a week's free trial of Nokia Maps with it. It's also a very solid phone. The metal construction makes it very sturdy, as well as stylish. The only black mark against it is a red one...the power button, for some inexplicable reason, is red. It sticks out like a sore thumb. That's a minor niggle though, I love this thing.

Now I just need to get that POS Samsung I bought a few months back repaired so I can sell it off.

Fuck...I've been jonesing hard for an iPhone 3G lately...I think that is the only smartphone I would own, based on the awesomeness that is my iPod Touch.

I just got a consulting gig that pays off in a % of the total sales the company will make if my information turns out to be useful...so maybe if this takes off it'll be time to bite the bullet and sell my soul to Rodgers.

How did I know moe started this thread? tongue_orig.gif

Is the powered button the red button above the p key? If so it doesn't see, too bad.

Hmm, over here red is a pretty common color for on/off switches, even the shutdown button for windows is red...

I think he meant in relation to the rest of the design, as a bright red button on a neutral-colored device would be somewhat of an eyesore.

I think with the E71, I've officially sold my soul to Symbian. I love it.

Eyesore it is...

What really makes it bad is the fact is the rest of the phone is so well executed and built, and then there's cheap-looking and feeling red button at the top.

iPhone 3G.

On it now, love it.
Bjorn
I would be on it too, but the only company in Canada which offers it is Rodgers, who are universally regarded as crooks...and they want a three year contract with an additional $70/month for any plan which takes advantage of the phones abilities.

There are already stories of Rodgers sending customers $1000 bills for exceeding the limits of their supposedly "unlimited" plans.

There is hope though, the government just sold $4,000,000,000 worth of wireless airwaves, a majority of which to new companies, with the hope of stimulating the creation of new wireless companies, all of which would be insane to not offer GSM 3G networks.

^ Doesn't Fido offer the iPhone. I could've sworn friends of mine got their iPhones from them.

I'll be in Canada this winter, and am seriously considering ipod touch coz you guys get it way cheaper than here. Is it worth it? My only want is that the surfing is easy, and I can download stuff from the internet using my schools wireless...would that work?

Hopefully I can get a decent deal while Im there.

I already have a decent mp3, so it'll be for tv shows on the train (easy to get vids on the touch?), wifi surf, maps etc.

moe, that phone looks uber cool...although I have never seen it before. Is it easy to surf using the buttons etc. is it touch screen?
moe
^ Heh, it's kind of the thing to have right now in Dubai, I guess it really isn't as common everywhere else. A friend of mine whipped out his E71 in Paris, and apparently it garnered attention from pretty much everyone. Yeah surfing and all is really easy, and thankfully...it isn't touch screen. As I've stated before, I'm not really convinced by touch screens, and I love that this phone for that. It's all business...with that added dose of style. I should also probably add that the E71 has a nice weight to it...it feels really good in your hand. The dimensions, weight, it's all spot-on.

Yes, the iPhone is available from Fido as well. However Fido is owned by Rogers so if Bjorn has an issue with Rogers maybe it extends to Fido.

Rogers/Fido is the only carrier in Canada to operate a GSM/HSPA network, hence the only ones who can carry the iPhone.

The other two large operators TELUS and Bell have announced a joint venture to build a HSPA network but I don't think it will be operational until late next year at the earliest.
Bjorn
^and I'm willing to wait for another carrier, although I have heard that Telus is not much better than Rogers.

I just talked to a friend today who has one from Rogers, and he pays $52.00 a month after he pays all his fees and taxes...which is doable considering I pay $32.00 now and could write it off as a business expense. The only thing is that I would want the 16GB model, as I would like to have my entire 12GB music library on there...which is a $350 buy in, as opposed to the $200 buy in for the 8GB.

To answer your question, it's a pretty cool bit of kit. You can access the WiFi from it, although I don't think you can DL non apple files. I load video shows onto mine...I just convert AVI files I download to MP4 will a piece of freeware I downloaded called videora...makes sitting in waiting rooms and on buses much more tolerable.

Where in Canada are you going?

Moe, just out of curiosity, how many phones would you say you go through in a year?
moe
^ Usually, when things go well...one. I go through more if I see a good deal, or, as was the case this year, my phone choice sucked. Seriously, don't listen to reviews ever...just stick to Nokia. I started the year with a Nokia 8600 Luna that I'd bought the previous year. When pieces of the trim started coming off, I decided it was time for a new phone, and I went in for the Samsung U900 Soul after reading rave reviews. The screen failed within the first week, and while it was being fixed under warranty, I was using a Motorola RAZR2 V8 that my family bought as a back-up phone for anyone who needed it (we got dirt cheap). I was somewhat impressed and used it for a couple months, until I got fed up with the shitty battery life and went back to the Samsung. The Samsung's camera, and screens proceeded to fail again, and I decided I was done with it. My parents bought me the E71 as an early Eid present. I'm very, very impressed with this phone and don't intend to get anything else unless I can find a killer deal on a used Vertu Ascent Ti, Tag Heuer Meridiist, or Porsche Design P'9521. The chances of that happening are pretty much nil.

those nokia's a freaking nice... I kinda wish crackberries were built the same way...
moe
^ Yeah, the build quality is excellent. Short of a Vertu, I've never used a phone built this well.
