Driving the new Mazda 3
Hilton Holloway
After a short, but fast drive around the Icelandic coast in the late-model 3 prototypes, there’s no doubt that Mazda has made a major leap forward with its new direct-injection engines.
The new 2.0-litre DI engine – driving a very slick six-speed manual ‘box – is impressively smooth, refined and torquey.
While the revamped 3 still delivers the sensation of being a more compact, handy and pointable car than is common in this class, this petrol engine feels broad shouldered and bigger than its quoted capacity. It has something of feel of the old Golf V5 – a relatively compact car with a satisfyingly punchy engine.
However, the real surprise comes from the 2.2-litre diesel. Not only is this motor also exceptionally refined, it also has quite exceptional pace, especially in the compact 3. Very well matched with the ratios in the six-speed ‘box, the 2.2 had standout overtaking ability – always a good indication of real-world performance. Indeed, such is the engine’s mid-range muscle, Mazda engineers admitted that this model has superior performance to the current 3 MPS.
One problem that affected both cars was tyre noise, long a weak spot on certain Mazda models. But defining the extent of the problem was very difficult because not only are Iceland’s roads some of the noisiest in the developed world, these prototype cars didn’t have the final specification (quieter) tyres fitted.
Even so, it's clear that the next Mazda 3 will be a big improvement over the current car.

I'm just gonna go ahead and add the pics in here, be kinda pointless to start a new thread.

Does it look to anyone else like the hood/front is way too cutesy?
EDIT: I love the color though... what is that, like a semi-matte gray/silver?

Automobile Magazine had an article a few months back about how Mazda was really a design leader for the Japanese manufacturers. A lot of them are vaguely anonymous, or they borrow lots of styling designs from elsewhere, but Mazda has found a design aesthetic that is both instantly recognizable as Japanese and extremely attractive.
Anyway, I love it. If the new 3 is the same jump forward in refinement that the new 6 is, a new-gen Mazdaspeed3 could be hard to pass up.

I hope they make a sedan and/or coupe version of the mazdaspeed3...

Tons of RX-8 in the front. Weird how they made that work on a compact sedan.
Personally I was never too enthralled by the Mazda3. When I drove one back in 2004 or 2005 it felt very quiet and isolated. Sure, it was pleasantly firm, the interior was comfortable, refined, looked nice, and so on, but I got no steering feel and no sense of what the suspension was up to. It was such a letdown from the Protegé, despite the 3's higher capabilities in terms of sheer performance numbers.
Then again, I think Mazda may have addressed some of those issues after I drove one. I haven't driven a 3 from the last few model years, or a Mazdaspeed3.

^ I still think while the Protege was fun, but lifeless at the helm. The 3 is the opposite of that.
This new 3 is absolute sex, I must have one.

Dual exhaust outlets FTL, but the rest is really fresh.
Makes the Civic/Corolla/Sentra trio look dated.

That front is uber Citroen C4!
I like it... Does it come in an MSP?
... or even a hatch for that matter?
EDIT... read this a little late...

As for the Mazda3 five-door hatchback, we'll have to wait until some time after the LA Auto Show for that, though we're hoping the new Mazdaspeed3 is not far behind.

Mazdaspeeds historically come at the end of a model's lifetime, and unlike other brands that have changed their practice of that, Mazda really hasn't. I'd say it'll be at least MY2011 before the new Mazdaspeed3 debuts, if there even is one.

Epic fail. Given how popular sport compacts are right now, Mazda would make a huge mistake by continuing to use this sort of timeframe for Mazdaspeed models.

Someone mentioned a sedan version of the MS3, which I've wanted for a while now. I hope they make one. Of course, maybe they should start by offering bigger engines in the ME, and reintroduce the manual transmission option ('05 was the only year they had it apparently...lucky me).

How about AWD on the MS3? The 263/280 was already nuts on FWD... not sure if the new 2.5T (I suppose?) will like to put 300/320 to the front wheels...

VW can sell a three-door GTI and a five-door GTI. Chevy can sell a two-door and a four-door Cobalt SS Turbo and an HHR SS. Subaru can sell both a hatch and sedan WRX. Seems to me that Mazda should be able to offer an MS3 in at least two body styles, released contemporaneously with the normal Mazda3.

Sure they COULD, but it doesn't quite jive with Mazdaspeed's history. I hope they'll change their tack and make the Mazdaspeed moniker representative of a more complete model line. As it is, Mazdaspeed means "no-holds-barred special edition for our aging model"; see the Mazdaspeed Miata, Mazdaspeed Protege, and Mazdaspeed6 as examples. Though the fact that the Mazdaspeed3 will live on for 4 full model years (2006 through 2009) certainly points toward bucking that trend. Anyway, we'll see, but I don't think Mazdaspeed is about to become Mazda's WRX/SE-R/GTI/etc. quite yet.

I imagine that with the credit crunch, hot hatches may be put on hold for a while.
This is based on the assumption that the people who buy these cars are generally young men who take out loans to afford them. Which from my experience seems to be the case.

With the credit crunch, I can see people who might've bought, say a 3-series or G35 (if they bought them for being sports sedans), going in for a pocket rocket. That's just what i'd do though...

I agree. I was planning to replace the Jetta in a few years with a luxury sport sedan. Now I'm thinking hard if a decently-refined sport compact would do the job.

Someone at another forum found this:

It's an almost Saab-ish layout, it seems to me. Not that that's a bad thing.

I'm not seeing much Saab, and if I did I'd probably cry a river. What I do see is the Civic interior done right. I really, really love what they've done with the 3.

At first I thought it was an interior shot of the european civic. The plastics seem to be a downgrade from the actual Mazda3... but it's just a picture so I can't really tell.

^ The plastics were robust, but hardly the last word in quality on the outgoing 3. These are definitely an upgrade from the looks of things.

Mazdaspeed3 caught testing at the Nurburgring. It's a five-door. Aesthetically, it's predictable except for the addition of a hood scoop, which the current MS3 doesn't have.
So two pieces of good news: (1) there WILL be a Mazdaspeed version of the next-gen Mazda3, and (2) we won't have to wait until halfway through the next-gen 3's life cycle to get the Mazdaspeed version.

Possibly 300 HORSEPOWER? If they make that FWD still, the number of deaths due to torque steer will surely rise.

Euro Focus RS is 295 horsepower and FWD. I'm expecting something similar from this.
it sounds like a recipe for disaster, but apparently the Focus RS makes it work.

Top Gear (magazine) did a story on the suspension and differential setup for the Focus RS, and came away very very impressed...
QUOTE(Top Gear Magazine @ August 2008)

...Enter the RevoKnuckle. "We've redesigned the front suspension", says Jost. "It's a double wishbone setup and uses something similar to a MacPherson strut, only better. The knuckle is mounted to the strut, and now the strut doesn't move under load. It works in conjunction with a new Quaife limited-slip diff, and eliminates steering disturbance. To be honest it's almost unbelievable"
Apparently the guy who designed the setup was partially responsible for the setup of the E30 M3.
