You know, I've been a supporter of the Bangled BMs. X3 aside (it's too anonymous) even the ones I wasn't too sure of (the pre-facelift 7 and the X6) grew on me, and I like them now. However, it appears BMW has screwed up big time. The X1 takes many of the themes from the gorgeous Concept CS, and the slick new 7, and manages to look like something Bangle puked out after drinking too much one night. This is truly hideous, like Aztek/Rodius hideous. And what's with BMW stealing Japanese tailight designs these days? Admittedly, the 3-series coupe, and upcoming 7 are good-looking cars, but the 3-series has some Millenia/Xedos lights, whilst the 7's look like they came off a Lex. With the X1, it seems they poached them from Infiniti...
Officially, this is a concept, and that does mean there's time for things to be rectified (such as never building this atrocity), but somehow I doubt that'll ever happen. Audis have never looked so good...

That color doesn't compliment. At all. But overall, that's disgusting. And the best part is, it'll be appearing in sorority parking lots all over the country... in this color, in white, and in red.
FUCKIN' YUCK.

The "six-eyes-face" is ugly and boring, too. As boring as the horizontal mouth of the new 7 series.
More and more idealess-looking in my opinion.

There are just too many lines. It's like Mitlov said about the Accord, good ideas, but poorly put together. Actually, in this case, it's more like bad ideas, poorly put together.

"Excessively busy" seems to be BMW's main styling direction right now:

I think it looks OK. Honestly it's way better than the neanderthalic 2002 7-series or the bleh 5-series.

Yeah, I think they've really lost it when it comes to styling.

It's sad, I was thinking about it, and there's only ONE car in their current lineup where I say "damn, they nailed that."

^Heh, good point.
I'd say from the side it's not bad at all. But many of the details/lines elsewhere are just awful.

Coco Chanel once said to remove one piece of jewelry right before you leave the house. BMW should try this approach with their character lines.

I really like the Z4. I really REALLY like the Z4 Coupe and Z4M Roadster. I flat-out love the Z4M Coupe.
The E92 is inoffensive...too boring for me to really care, but I couldn't call it ugly.

I've always had a soft spot for the M6, but besides that and the Z4, thats really it. And they're getting rid of the Z4 in about a year, so who knows what they'll cook up this time.

If we're talking "needs" instead of "wants," I don't think there's a single BMW that fills someone's needs as well as a cheaper, more reliable vehicle.

That's not true. Some people might need to show off their money in the most douchebag-like possible display.

I absolutely adore the BMW Z4M Coupe. That car has a recurring role in my wet dreams. Apart from that, the e38 and the e39 were last of the BMWs that I truly loved.

What I mean is where is this supposed to fit in with an X3, X5 & X6 already out there?

Cheaper and smaller than the X3. I mean, BMW has four different sizes of sedan/coupe (1, 3, 5/6, 7), and now three different sizes of crossover (X1, X3, X5/X6). Considering that crossovers are as popular as sedans/coupes in certain markets, like where I live, three different sizes of crossover makes at least as much sense as four different sizes of sedan/coupe.
