I would agree with you, but in M3 pricing territory, Audi is not putting anyone in check. I wish it was 335 competitive pricing (along with the S5, which is rumored to also receive this engine soon), it'd definitely be my next car, but I guess I'm going to have to stick with the A5.

I don't think the new S4 will cost more than the last one, and will probably cost a little less. I'm expecting an MSRP of around $45k which isn't much higher than the 335i and far less than the M3.
And the S5 will be sticking with the V8 at least for a couple years...keeping the V8 in the S5 fits with its GT image better and also serves to separate the A4 and A5 model lines.

From the rumors I've read, they said that the V6 supercharged engine is going to make its way to the S5, but then again, those are rumors. I don't think the MSRP of a S4 will be around $45k, when a B8 A4 3.2 "Prestige" w/ S-Line starts at $43,300. The S4 is probably going to start at the least of $48,000. They wouldn't make the S4 only $2,700 more when it has another 100hp + "S" badge. Also don't forget that the S5 starts at $50,300, so their is no way the B8 S4 is going to start at $45,000.

Part of the reason the S4 is getting the V6 is because it's destined to be a cheaper proposition than the V8-powered S5. Also the S5 commands some price premium because it's a stylish 2-seater and people are paying for the looks and the cachet. It's not playing in the same ultra-competitive segment that the more pedestrian A4 is.
And also, comparing the S4 to the Prestige 3.2 neglects that the Prestige 3.2 is going to have a lot more standard equipment than the S4 (including an automatic, which is gonna cost at least $1000, maybe upwards of $2000, in the S4) since the Prestige is the top-of-the-line-has-all-the-bells-and-whistles model and the S4 will have more stuff on the options list. That and the A4 V6 models have never been a great value proposition in their own right.

I'll wait to see how it drives though, because the on-paper stuff looks spot-on. It's more of where the M3-market used to be, and I like that. I think the M3 has become too fat, expensive, and powerful. Visually though, it does absolutely nothing for me. I think in the transition from A5 to A4, Audi lost a lot of the sexyness, which resulted in blandness.

OMG! Thats a pretty damn hot car. VAG does not claim a victim, but strengthens its empire. I drove the previous S4 and wow, what a car that was, I can only image this one to be that much better. Great thing is, working for a car magazine, I'm almost guaranteed a drive in it. Yay!

wow nice alternative to a 335i. Although I much rather have one with a turbocharged engine, just something about supercharger whine I find unappealing.
