I didn't know Porsche's V6 was a VR6?
How much re-working does Porsche do to the VW sourced engines before they get installed?

Yes porsche's V6 is a VR6, both the old 3.2 liter Cayenne motor and the new 3.6 liter. I presume that the Panamera is getting the Cayenne's engines and that this V6 isn't an all-new effort (or potentially something weird like the new Audi 3.0T).
Porsche tunes the motor for their own application...exactly how I'm not sure, but I've heard talks of differences in exhaust manifold/headers as well as camshafts to push the power peak farther up the rev range to make them feel sportier and increase the peak output figures.

VR6 means 15 degree V, right?
If so, that engine sounds like sex with the right exhaust (i.e., what's on the R32).

VR6 is german for "V Reihenmotor" (aka V-Inline). The VR6 uses a narrow angle between V6 cylinder banks to put staggered cylinders under a single cylinder head. The bottom end actually uses an inline-6 style design without the split journals that V6s use, hence the higher number of main bearings in VR6s. The angle isn't necessary 15°, it was 15° for the 2.8, 2.9, and 3.2 liter engines...the 3.6 liter VR6 has a 10.6° angle between the cylinder banks.

My friend used to have a dodge truck with an inline 6, there was so much room in the engine bay that he used to get right in there to do repairs. I have never seen the engine bay of a V6 Cayenne, but I imagine it's a similar situation...crazy.
I don't know why, but I just always assumed that Porsche had developed it's own V6 for the Cayenne.

Well now that I've had the chance to study the high-res shots, I gotta say it is actually really really pretty. The back end's on the chunky side from a handful of angles but overall it looks really great.

A quick chop, sorry for the large pic..
Anyway, changed the wheels, lowered the front, sorted the back a bit, removed the rear door handle and I removed the ugly line between the rear light and the rear door.
Doesn't look much better, but it's something..

Sorry, but this ^ looks worse IMO. It looks droopy and bulbous.
So far this angle is my favorite.

Edit: I find that if I look at it as an estate, I like it a lot more. Odd that my classification of the car would change my opinion.

I'm not sure Porsche would be happy about that. They probably don't even seen it as a sedan, but more as a coupe.

That's a hatchback, full stop. Not a sedan, not a coupe, not a wagon, but definitely a hatchback.
Of course, Porsche marketing would never admit that it's the same body style as a Golf or an old Saab, but it is.

I was watching the video at Porsche's site, and it's weakest angle is rear-on. It looks bulbous, and rear heavy. It works from pretty much everywhere else, and the hi-res photos have it wearing a different set of wheels which look fantastic.

It's a piece of crap. Very very hard to use. And you can't even download the wallpapers unless you create an account with Porsche.
Here's what a minisite for a new car SHOULD be like...and it's from an unexpected source:

^ I remember creating an account to download the new 911 wallpapers earlier this year. Which was worthless because as soon as they integrated the 911 on to the main site, they had a better selection available for download anyway. I'll just wait thanks...
Also, Ford isn't exactly an unexpected source. They've traditionally had very well designed minisites for new vehicles. I remember when I was dabbling in web design, we were all envious of a design company known as 2Advanced (or something along those lines). Turns out Ford had contracted them to develop the launch site for the then new F-150. They've done other good minisites since.

Get me a beer, I'm gonna go cry into it:

EDIT: On the plus side, check out the rear seats. They're racy bucket seats just like the front seats. Nice.

I'm actually not sure what's worse...the hybrid or a diesel...I suppose a hybrid is more in character.
Also the blue example with the white interior, and those gorgeous wheels, looks fantastic.

What is that thing in the grill? IR camera? Radar guided cruise control?
clarkma5
Nov 25 2008, 01:32 PM
Radar guided cruise control is the most likely suspect.
The hybrid's not a surprise, I mean, the Cayenne Hybrid actually runs and will be released pretty soon and the Panamera basically uses Cayenne drivetrains.

Here's my version.
I don't think the swoop of the rear window is correct.. it should be more Porsche like. I also think the rear door are way too long.. so i shortened it a tiny bit and removed the rear door handles. It should open RX-8 Style. What do you think? Oh well.. this car should still die in a fire.

You made it too short and the original rear window apes the 911 too much.

I like your design IF the car was 3-Series size (which I wish it was). As long as it's about as big as 5-Series or 7-Series, I think it's better the way it is.

Paint the windows black, slam it, and chop off half the doors. That's some classic automotive engineering there.
I like the Panamera in both diesel and hybrid forms. I'd get one instead of a Quattroporte.

Hell Yeah. The Quattroporte is the biggest disappointment of a car to ever hit our offices IMO. It's a Maserati for christ sake, it should be a great car. It's just not. The Porsche really does not have to do all that much to beat out the Maser. The Estoque is going to be where it's at.

Blasphemers all of you. I don't know about the new ones, but the pre-update model was up there with the best luxury sedans dynamically (a bit rough around the edges), but it added a sense of occasion to the mix that no other sedan can hope to match (save perhaps the Arnage, but that's going out of production, and it cost significantly more). It was also drop-dead gorgeous.
This will no doubt destroy the Quattroporte dynamically, but they're different types of cars. The Maser is really the Italian answer to the Jag XJ and Merc S-class. The Panamera is a four-door coupe competitor for the CLS and upcoming Rapide.
