Note to the Lexus SC430: it is now beyond over for you. Infiniti, Nissan's BMW-hunting luxury brand, has unveiled the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible, a retractable hardtop 4-seater that preserves the Coupe's good looks even with its 3-piece folding metal roof neatly tucked out of sight, as you can see here. Power from the 3.7L V6 will be in excess of 320 horses, and numerous comparos against the BMW 335i convertible are inevitable. You can practically hear the buff mags reserving track time as we speak. Sunny Los Angeles will be the venue for the car's formal unveiling in November, and likely a fertile ground for sales when the time comes.

From what I've read, the SC430 is not going to be replaced, and instead, Lexus is going to make a coupe and convertible version of the IS.

That's exactly what's happening. There'll be a folding hard top and a coupe of the IS.

In the transition from coupe to convertible, the G has lost every single ounce of aggression and now has all the excitement of the Camry Solara. It comes off as an old lady car, like what a 50-something upper-middle-class southern californian housewife would drive down to Rodeo Drive at 23 miles an hour.

I kinda see where you're coming from, but I think a view from more angles, and pictures with the top up will prove that wrong.

Wait until someone fires up the VQ and smokes the rear tires. That image will disappear mighty quickly.
Honestly, I always thought that the second-generation G (sedan and coupe)
looked big, soft, and bulbous. They just don't drive that way.
moethepaki
Aug 18 2008, 03:25 PM
I think the sedan became better looking, the first-gen was always awkward. The coupe took a step backwards though...it's not as pretty as the original, and wtf is with that chrome spoiler/strip thing...

Well the convertible's definitely going to be slower and softer than the coupe/sedan no matter how you slice it...
4-seat convertibles never convey a sense of sportiness. The closest two I've seen to doing so are the RS4 and the M3, and both of those cars are dynamically far inferior to their hardtop counterparts anyway. I doubt Infiniti's going to crack the performance conundrum that large convertibles always face. Plus regardless of whether or not they do, I still think it looks lamer in side profile than the sedan or coupe.

Oh I agree. All I was saying was that I don't think that a G37 convertible is
more lame, or soft
er, than, say, a 335i convertible. It's certainly more lame and softer than a 335i coupe or a G37 coupe or the like.

This is a bogus pic, but it will look similar.
Keep in mind that it will be Infiniti's first 'vert in over a decade, so I'm sure it will be very soft on the performance side. Plus, the way the luxury car market is selling right now (ie not at all).. expect several new models throughout that industry to be "softer" and more appealing to a wider demographic.

PEBBLE BEACH, California — The world got its first official look at the 2009 Infiniti G37 convertible on Saturday, as the automaker unveiled a photo of the car at the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. The G37 convertible, with a three-piece automatic retractable hardtop, will go on sale in the spring of 2009.
Infiniti is not known for a slow striptease of its products, including photo debuts. But it appears to have felt compelled to show something well in advance of the Los Angeles auto show.
"We've had a lot of bad photos out there," explained Infiniti spokesman Kyle Bazemore to Inside Line on Friday when asked about the G37 convertible. "We want consumers to see how beautiful the car is. So many people have tried to Photoshop it out on the Internet using a photo of the G coupe. We want to make sure there is an accurate representation of it."

Well that sucks... we have some other images floating around the office that I assumed were more current (and looked way better). Seems they dulled it wayy down for production.

That's actually true, I have the tendency of driving with my windows down a lot. A convertible would certainly solve that issue.

Such a bad time for this car to be released! Nobody is buying luxury cars these days. We've got in the office and I must say, in person, the car looks much more sorted out... its slightly edgier than the SC, but there is noticeable bulk back there ( i would imagine there would have to be)

@ Maxima. I think it may be more for the ME market. The 3-series convertible seems to be outselling the coupe by quite a large margin since its introduction. The G and the IS are both hot sellers in this region, so a hard-top convertible would be a natural step up. The G honestly doesn't look bad IMO, the IS is really awkward though. I also still really think the SC is a good-looking car.

^ Agreed 100%. I'm guessing they made it a hardtop because a) All of its rivals are, or will be, so it needs one to compete. b ) The 370Z roadster will probably be a soft top, lets just hope that isn't an atrocity with the top up like the current one.

I understand that it's expected in that segment, but honestly that's what makes that segment so damned lame. So, yeah, see why they did it, still think it's wrong.
