I'm still rather vague on the rules.

I think the C5 Corvette has aged well. I remember seeing my first one back in late '97. As a 17 year old walking home from school it was awesome++. It's hard to believe that was 11 years ago sometimes.

The "rules" is to post a car that was introduced at least 10 years ago that you think looks newer/fresher than it actually is. The rest is totally indescribable because it's all opinions on style.

The C5 crossed my mind but I personally felt that the svelter, sharper C6 really REALLY made it look like a '90s car.

As for moe's latest trio of choices, I gotta say the 7-series I agree with, but the Miata looks as old as it is and so does the Corrado to my eyes (though the Corrado is definitely an example of late '80s style done very, very well).
DB9
Lotus Elise 160 (1996)

clarkma5
^^ excellent choice! Maybe it's because they're so extraordinarily rare in the US, but anytime I see a first gen Elise/Exige they always look so monumentally cool, modern, and insect-like.

They look more modern than the modern Elise!
moethepaki
^ It doesn't look more modern, but it looks better for sure. The current Elise looks like it's supposed to be a 6-year old's wet dream. The original has that classic sports car look to it. It's a look that'll never go out of style, and 50 years from now people will be talking about how pretty it was.

Also, I think my Corrado choice was pretty bad. I was looking at some more photos and it does look pretty dated. I'm sticking with the Miata though...maybe it has something to do with the fact that I only remember seeing three in my life (the MX5 went on sale officially in this region this year).
johnny.msyl.25
Agreed. A decent choice there.

I don't think it looks as old as it is but that might be due to it ending production so relatively recently. True, compared with the current C6 the C5 looks dated. I have tried, but I have failed.

Maybe not in pictures, but definitely in person. No? I mean, it was introduced in late 89. Even the interior- especially considering the essential design lasted until what... 2003? Good to me.
clarkma5
It was the second car posted, hex.
hexagone
Oops, I'm at work. I try to maximize the efficiency of my DS browsing, thusly skimming a lot of the information posted.
hexagone
Okay, I got one.

It was introduced in 1999 (almost 10 years)

and oh my! How could we have forgotten this gem of a design? 1998 for all yous.

DB9
yea, ill agree with that.
Megadeus
Scirocco Mk1 (Europe 1974, US 1975)

Admittedly, it doesn't look "modern", but I doubt most people would think it was designed in the early 70s.
clarkma5
You wanna talk about something that doesn't look like it was designed in the early '70s:

Megadeus
Damn, totally forgot about the 928. Good one.

Wow, I'd always found the Mk1 Scirocco to be ugly up until I saw this photo.
dcho
im suprised no one mentioned the GC8 impreza yet? esp the prodrive p1
Mitlov
Both the Scirocco and the 928 look to me to be mid-80s cars. That's over a decade younger than they really are. Nice.
moethepaki
Saw the 928 in traffic yesterday (unfortunately my cell phone had fallen under it's seat, so no pix for the sightings thread), and it looked OLD. I think it's an extremely dated design, and the early ones are downright ugly. But I also saw this on the way to work...

The Audi S8. Still such a clean, elegant design. I miss the understated clean looks that used to be characteristic of Audis. The new ones are way too "blingy"...
clarkma5
This one just occurred to me...

VW New Beetle. Concept in 1995, production in 1998. Especially with the minor facelift in 2006, it looks much newer than that:

I think the early New Beetles look horribly like '90s cars. Something about the front end reminds me of a Neon. Although admittedly when they first came out I couldn't stop staring if one drove by.

True, but the same might be said of all retro-mobiles. With Harley-Davidsons, for example, it's hard to know whether a design is from the 1960s, 1970s, or 2000s just from glancing at it (unless you inspect the mechanicals or look for signs of aging). Retro car designs haven't been around as much, but I suspect that the New Beetle, Mini Cooper, and the latest batch of pony cars won't look dated nearly as fast as other designs from the 1990s and 2000s will.
moethepaki
The Mustang looked dated the day they launched it IMO. All the other retro designs have aged pretty well.

1989 Nissan S-Cargo (from Nissan's niche car period - Be-1, Pao, Figaro)

Not sexy like the sports cars pervading this thread, but the design doesn't look nearly 20 years old. Substitute some flush headlights for the bug-eyes, make it a hybrid or electric, and it wouldn't look that out of place as an urban delivery vehicle for Europe or Japan today.

I remember when I saw the first pics of the 'New Beetle', I thought to myself someone has been ganking ideas from the japanese retro cars. I had this very vehicle in mind. Its really hard to tell what year the the van is, certainly indictive of timeless design whether or not you like it.
trump
what can I say, I have a thing for this car....

Apparently I'm not the only one:

Seriously? That thing looks dated as hell to me...

^ Those are gorgeous. IMO, one of the most beautiful coupes ever made. However, I much prefer the pre-facelift, with the tiny spoiler, as opposed to the wing.
350Z
The FD was the third car posted. Not that I mind seeing it again.
GTR
Mk. II Toyota MR2 (SW20)

Nissan Skyline GTR (BCNR33)

hexagone
The MR2 has aged well, but the GT-R just looks old and from 1995.
John Potts
The ford escort rs

hello fastest factory powered 4 banger, too bad we didnt get any in the states
350Z
That has aged exactly one year every year since it came out.
moethepaki
Can't believe everyone missed this one...

The original Ford GT40. Testament to it's timeless style is the fact that they were able to release a new model, just a few years ago, with only minor revisions.
OHirtenfelder
^ That is very true. I've never been a big fan of the GT40/GT, but it really is way ahead of its time. Looking at that pic, I cant believe the car, and then the little plaque that reads :1965. Shit man, this thing has aged well!
Audi Addict
I'd like to nominate the SVX (but I am a bit biased): It still looks modern and fresh, but that is Giugiaro design for you.

Also, the TT, but someone already posted it.
clarkma5
Eh I'm sorry I don't think the SVX is fresh (it is cool, though).
redls1bird
I agree with the SVX being a little outdated.

Also the GT40 is a race car, which i thought we werent including in this post?
350Z
There was a GT40 road car.
Synesthesia
Haha the SVX is obviously from the early '90s. Look at the weird windows, the lights, the shape of the body, the wheels, the interior, etc...
