Because as much as people try and make it seem like it isn't.... it's only his 2nd year in F1. He's still a novice. He has no experience.

I personally think lewis would do much better (or maybe make fewer mistakes) on a team where he wasn't the prodigy found and groomed by the team principal. Not to say he isn't doing well, but I think we would see more consistent results (IMO Lewis needs a perfect situation to give 100%).
I wonder what the atmosphere at Mclaren is like...do critical comments about Lewis amount to a quick trip to the unemployment line...

I don't want to defend Lewis too much, because I'm British you'll all immediately jump on me! Canada and Brazil examples were completely his fault. But China? He was told to stay out on those tyres wasn't he, so that's not fully his fault 50-50.
Also he doesn't always need a perfect situation to give 100%, see Canada 07 and I would say Japan 07, except for his antics behind the safety car when Webber and Vettel went out.

He chose to race Raikkonen, and in doing so forgot to conserve his tires.
