Discussion thread for the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix.
This could potentially be a certain Renault drivers last grand prix as well.

Was an action packed race last year, with Kubica's massive accident and all - hope it's the same again.

That was an intense last few minutes in qualifying!
Kubica screams to pole-- only for Hamilton to beat him by .016 seconds quicker!
Wow.. probably the most exciting Q3 I've ever seen..

I was screaming for Kubica at the end there. I hope that guy wins some GPs this year.

How serious is the whole breaking up of the track issue...I was watching ITV and they didn't stop mentioning it.
I ask because I have been watching the Canadian GP for a good eight years now, and have been there...and never heard anything about this until now.
What can Montreal do about this in the long term to ensure that they don't piss off the FIA enough to cause them to reconsider extending the contract (I live in constant fear of Canada loosing its GP).
Wow... Hamilton takes Kimi out in the pitlane!

+1 on everything you said. Great job by Kubica! So glad to see him win.
Decent race from Massa, in a difficult weekend for him he managed to pull a decent result.
I hope Hamilton gets penalized for what he did.
Poor Kimi, aside from Brazil last season, that guy has the worst luck.

I was surprised how subdued Raikkonen was after that incident. Hamilton has been given a 10 place penalty for France if you haven't heard - entirely his fault, I would've thought they'd be getting the hang of it by now - well I suppose Raikkonen and Kubica obviously have!
Im very pleased for Kubica he certainly deserved a win this year and now leads the Drivers standings!

^Kubica is amazingly consistent, he has finished in the top four every race except for Australia (where he was in an accident). If he keeps this up he could easily win the championship.
On another note I'm so glad BBC is taking over covering F1 next year, these ITV guys are so fucking annoying. They asked some drivers `was it the poor track conditions that caused your accident, should the FIA penalize the organizers`and each driver aside from Webber has said that everyone had to deal with those conditions...also, for the first part of the race they mentioned the track every lap almost. I recognize that it is a problem, but it was a greatrace, certainly they could have had some better stuff to talk about.
Furthermore the ITV commentators need to learn to shut up when the team radio light comes on...I know they probably don't have a lot of warning, but nevertheless they talk over it far too often for my taste.
Every time I see the Speed Channel torrent I consider downloading it for an alternative, but I remember the days before I started watching ITV and I was never too happy with the Speed coverage. Also it seems like Speed has more commercials.
IMO it was a great and exciting race, certainly the best this year.

I personally think it's fun to listen to Bob Varsha and old man David Hobbs. To me it just sounds like 2 old guys watching a Formula 1 race.

^they weren't bad, I mainly stopped watching the Speed coverage because it started to feel like they did a commercial break every ten minutes. I remember being so frustrated because it seemed like they missed almost everything. Also in the Scott Speed era the commentators were almost unbearable, ironically the ITV people aren't much better concerning Hamilton.
Martin Brundle is OK, as is James Allen and Ted Kravitz, but they can sometimes get so fucking defensive of Hamilton...like when Hamilton ran into the back of Alonso. Also they constantly mention stuff, like the poor condition of the Montreal track...I understood after qualifying that it wasn't that great, but they kept on mentioning it
I'm not a fan of Louise Goodman, I don't like the kinds of questions she asks...a lot of them, IMO, sound like she already has an answer made up in her head, and shes just trying get the driver to say that thing. I thought Alonsos answer to her question about whether he blamed the track for taking away his assured third was brilliant. He essentially told her that it wasn't a third, since he still had to pit, and that every driver was racing under the same conditions, and he only had himself and the car to blame.

The only thing I didn't like about Vasha, Hobbs and co was the fact that they were broadcasting the race on Fox here in America. Because of that they had to dumb everything down and explain everything for the idiots that usually watch NASCAR and have no idea about F1. But I suppose if it attracts new fans then it's not too bad but I'm used to the usual Speed TV coverage where they assume the fans have a good knowledge of the sport and thusly the commentary is more interesting. They also do a great job of dropping a subject and listening to the team radio transmissions when they come across.

Wow what a dumb rookie move by Hami, typical rookie mistake, he has to appoligize to Kimi and Ferrari and Sauber, I was in awe when i saw that, there go my predictions. That totally shuffled everything, great drive by Kubica!

I love the Speed commentary. It's usually clever and sometimes funny. They used to cover Speed a lot when he raced, but they never skewed the facts to make him look better (Unlike what I hear about ITV). They just covered the local driver for his countrymen, I don't see any problem with that.

^I just thought the coverage of Speed was a bit excessive considering his results (or lack there of). Especially when there was so many more talented people coming up in F1 at the time.

Speed is trying to draw more viewers into the sport. Scotty got a ride and they saw an opportunity to further American interest in F1.

Plus the guys name is the same as the channel, what do you expect?
