A driver was killed this weekend in a crash at Altamont this weekend.

I made a post on my LeMons blog at Sternbergring.com, or check Jalopnik.com for news regarding the event.

This sucks... takes all the fun out of the event....

It's obvious this kinda thing would be inevitable with a 500$ car, although safety is not included in the 500$ I'm extremely positive that
people leave out a shitload loops...

Stories seem to imply that something may have happened to the driver before the crash. Cops say there was no mechanical failure on the car that would attribute to the crash. Witnesses of the crash say that it seemed like the driver didn't try to stop the car, but more or less went flat out into the wall at 50-60mph, implying that he may have passed out causing his foot to be dead weight on the throttle.

Thats sad news. Hopefully the event doesn't get canned due the some safety lawsuit and such.

It appears that the driver actually died of a heart attack before the crash; the crash was a result, not a cause, of his death.

QUOTE
Court Summerfield, a 47-year-old resident of Alameda who worked with his wife, Vickie, at Ole's Waffle Shop, died of a heart attack while running the race. The preliminary investigation performed by the CHP confirmed that nothing was wrong with #39 Team Cant Am's Volvo 242 Turbo and that Summerfield was unconscious when he hit the wall.

While this is just as sad for Mr. Summerfield's family, hopefully this means that LeMons will continue in the future.

Yeah, in an interview, his wife said that he went doing what he absolutely loved doing. We've all got to go somehow, and blacking out and fading away while doing what you love most is pretty hard to argue with.
