As we enter another year of F1 we can say hello to a brand new official safety car in the form of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz AMG SL63, which replaces last year’s CLK63 Black Series car. Another AMG model, the C63 Estate, was also picked to be this year’s official Medical Car. The two specially prepared AMG models will used for all 18 races this year and will debut at next week’s Australian GP in Melbourne.

The SL63 features the same 525hp 6.3L V8 engine as the production model and accelerates from 0-62mph in the same 4.6 seconds. A newly developed AMG sport exhaust system with larger pipe diameter and new rear silencers allows the high-revving AMG naturally aspirated engine to breathe even more freely.

Other modifications to the car include an uprated cooling system and new heavy-duty composite brakes. The vehicles feature larger coolers for the engine oil, transmission oil, cooling water and power steering. The SL63 safety car is also 220kg lighter than the production model thanks to a number of weight saving measures. These include carbon-fiber panels used for the bonnet, front and rear aprons, front wings and luggage compartment lid. The car’s roof is also fixed, meaning engineers could remove the complex convertible mechanism. The result is a weight reduction of 220 kg, with the Safety Car weighing in at just 1750 kg (with a full tank and without occupants).

Why??

Obviously not an F1 fan. /\ /\ /\

Sweet Cars, would be cooler if BMW M Models in, and having them split time!
AMG has had that gig for a while.
Vadvagool
Correct. Not an F1 fan, but why exactly are there AMG Medical cars?
johnny.msyl.25
Well F1 do have accidents. The AMG Medical Car will be around the track if any driver were hurt or injured to provide first aid.
Vadvagool
I realize its for medical response, but so are ambulances.
johnny.msyl.25
Well, I think ambulances can't move as fast and as nimble as a AMG C63 Estate. Raspberry.gif

Its just a very expensive advertising gimmick. Thats all.

The FIA have always had an agreement with Mercedes Benz to have Mercedes vehicles as their sanctioned safety and response cars. There's also local ambulances and local medical staff at each GP to serve any critical situation as well.

I might be thinking about LeMans, but I remember reading somewhere that there is a whole mobile hospital on site.

Um, possibly because a full sized ambulance can't move as fast as an AMG-derived Mercedes.

Simply put... if it weren't for the AMG Medical Car then Mika Hakkinen would be dead. The medical car is designed to be able to get to the scene of the accident as fast as the safety car can... and considering accidents happen at upwards of 230km/h then you realize the need for immediate medical attention. There ARE full-sized ambulances which in the case of a severe crash would make their way to the site but once again... it can't go fast or corner as fast.

All these cars are driven by current sports car drivers so it's not like some random joe blow is behind the wheel either.
Vadvagool
So they pretty much get there a few seconds, maybe a minute, before the ambulance to prove first response.

Guess it makes sense.
Zenix13
having AMG mercs provides 2 things, very fast response times to accidents and product placement for Merc.
