I was watching the new chicago video spdkilz posted some time back and I had a question about one thing, keep in mind I'm still new to driving, I get my license in 7 days from now.
Anyway, he took his engine to about 3k rpm and then I'm guessing he left of the clutch and climbined the RPM's from 3k up in first gear. What exactly does that do? Couldn't you just gun it as you release the clutch?

If I think I get what you're saying the reason is because if you have the clutch partially engaged and you're gunning the engine you'll wear the clutch down to nothing in no time.

I'm not sure what I'm saying at all either. If you want, you can download the video off of my server here:
http://www.ankitgupta.com//uploader/upload.../newchicago.wmvI ask that anyone getting that PLEASE NOT post it on other forums or distribute it, bandwidth doesn't come from the sky. It's shown once at 1 minute 24 seconds and again at 2 minutes 20 seconds

Ugh that music makes me gag but what do you expect from a drug dealer. anyways that's what's referred to as a clutch dump. Its used in drag racing. Basically the purpose is the launch the car at a higher RPM than you would if you just eased into it. I dont suggest you go out and do it on your car.

For a street car, if you want to launch aggressively, I suggest holding the revs at a good point where your powerband is just starting to get strong (in my car, if I had a stick, that'd be about 2000 RPMs, 3000-ish in a WRX, etc.) then just slip the clutch aggressively as you modulate the throttle. It's not nearly as damaging as a clutch dump and, properly executed, is just as fast, if not faster.

But it wears through your clutch really fast clark.

Eh, just don't do it too often. In my experience, clutches are more durable than people think they are.

I think what you're talking about, he dropped the clutch at 3k

Yes!
It's also called a launch. You can do it in an automatic too. Hold the car back with the brakes and bring the engine RPM up to the stall speed of the torque converter. Yeah it heats up your transmission so don't do it at every stoplight ok kids?
