A big V8 is too grand touring, and befitting of a coupe like the S5. What of the driver who longs for the tuning potential of an STi or an EVO but wants something more refined? For these people, Audi has heard your call. The next generation B8 S4 has already begun its gratuitous Nurburgring testing and we have it on extremely reliable word that a forced induction six beats under the car’s contoured hood.

Still just a rumor, albeit a pretty likely one. Personally I'll be sad to see the V8 go (it is a magnificent engine) but I can foresee the following benefits for a V6 S4:

-Keeps the A5 and A4 lines more separate, so the A5 doesn't just become an A4 coupe.
-Much more tuning potential out of the box for enthusiasts.
-Could be cheaper than the current V8 S4, giving Audi something to go up against the 335i with (since the 3.2 really isn't powerful enough to cut the mustard).
-Could be lighter in the nose, helping weight distro that much more.
-Makes the RS4 that much more special.

So I dunno. I'm a bit surprised by the notion, I just assumed that the S4 would always have a V8 from here on out...

Maybe it is a turbo V8 oh.gif

I think this makes sense with their attempts to make the B8 less nose-heavy. And personally, I prefer a turbo six to a V8, but that's just me.

maybe in concept but it's hard not to be won over by the B6/B7 S4's V8...it is just a magnificent motor. More rev happy than any cross-plane V8 deserves to be, and always smooth, not to mention it sounds great and has some serious punch.

It helps unblur the line between the 4 and 5, as the exterior design seems to be merging together, unfortunately I think.

I still prefer my B6 huh.gif

How does the S4 V8 differ from the RS4 V8? They're the same literage, I know that much. At least that beautiful V8 will still be in the RS4/R8.

Same basic design, same bore, stroke, bore spacing, aluminum block...the RS4's got direct injection, higher compression ratio, and all sorts of new engine internals that allow it to rev to 8250 RPM (probably stuff like pistons, conn rods, valve springs, valves...) not to mention the RS4's V8 is probably spec'd to tighter tolerances and has various breathing tricks. Clearly I dunno any of this for sure, but I can tell you it is certainly not exceptionally far removed from the S4's engine.

or a supercharger...but a twin turbo is more likely, given Audi's experience with turbocharging.

I'm expecting a V6 single turbo. Knowing Audi they might do something like that. I'd suspect they'll bump up the BHP by about 10 horses, but I may be wrong. If it's priced to be cheaper than the current B7, It may possess the same BHP.
clarkma5
Single turbo on a V engine...sincerely doubt it. Twin turbos are the standard on anything with more than 5 cylinders these days, in terms of minimizing lag and having a low boost threshold, and Audi is all about low lag and low boost threshold.

From a 3.0 TT V6, it's anyone's guess for power. 300 is a minimum but it may be as much as 360. I wouldn't be surprised one iota if it were less than the outgoing V8, or, more importantly, than the S5's V8.

Thats a given. Plus keeping with the whole luxury image the whole setup will undoubtedly be very mellow.

me too. I miss the B5 S4's biturbo motor. Sure it doesn't have the flat power delivery the 4.2 V8 does, but I personally thought it sounded way better with an exhaust system. All pissed off and growly with tons of turbo noise, whereas the V8 just sounds... odd.

with more displacement, FSI, and more modern technology in general (didn't the 2.7T come out like, in 1999?) this biturbo V6 should be... really fucking badass. Or at least I hope!

We have confirmed with inside sources that the B8 S4 will debut with a brand new 3.0-liter TFSI bi-turbo producing 330-hp. With this powerplant Audi can nearly match the B7's 340-hp output while providing even better performance figures. Manufacturer published (conservative) 0-60mph drops from 5.4 seconds to very low 5's, while the accompanying combined fuel economy rises from 17 mpg to over 20 mpg.

The new Automobile Magazine also says that the B8 S4 will have a 333 horsepower twin-turbo V6. But it also mentioned that it will be paired (exclusively, it sounded) to a DSG transmission.

Are twin-clutch automated manuals going to completely replace stickshifts? It's starting to seem like it.
clarkma5
If Audi can configure a DSG to handle more torque than their current 236 ft.-lb. of torque limited 6-speed...well, that'll be a coup. But I hope it doesn't replace the stick.

In all honesty, I'm expecting the second-gen dry-clutch 7-speed DSG to make its debut in something worthwhile one of these days.
