What happened to good rap? Honestly, good rap and hip-hop are so hard to come by these days...

And I'm being serious. If you've got some good underground stuff, throw it up. I need to refill the iPod this week.

You should check out the new Army of the Pharaos album: Ritual of Battle. The best newly released hip-hop album for a long time, in my opinion. You should also try the Soul Assassins Chapter I & II albums by DJ Muggs, and anything by Immortal Technique, plus anything by Gang Starr.

Two words: Fort Minor. Good rap, great rhythms and music, and none of the typical "bling bling bitches and hoes" gangsta crap.

First of all:

Mitlov, Fort Minor? Please...

Shinodas attempt at making a decent rap album is merely another version of some lame ass linkin park shit infused with a bit more rap instead of the usual 'crawling in my skin' garbage. Example being, in that song 'where'd you go', he fucking raps about barbecuing burgers and ribs. That entire album is full of half-assed monosyllabic rhymes that lack any sort of depth and creativity but merely cater to the general radio-listening audience. Man, that album just angers me.

Carrying on, here are a few albums that are an absolute must if you enjoy quality rap. Most of the stuff mentioned before me I do agree with, although I'm somewhat sceptical of everyone agreeing upon Immortal Technique. Yes I do enjoy a lot of his stuff, but at the same time he's almost like Jedi Mind Tricks... where he's rapping about killing, pillage, and just...killing. Oh well.

Non-Prophets- Hope. By far, my favorite album. Absolutely great throwback to hip hop of the 80's and 90's with intricate references scattered everywhere, most of which you could never even recognize unless you're a huge rap connosieur... yet still refreshingly modern in which honestly, I think every single track on this CD could be a single.

The Roots- Game Theory. Good stuff for relatively well-known artists.

MF-Doom- Mmm Food. Awesome rhymes, awesome wordplay, awesome beats.

Deltron 3030- Deltron 3030. If you're not familiar with Del's work, you're probably wrong. It's just that his work is so widespread you've most likely never realized he's been involved in a project. Example: Gorillaz

DJ Dangermouse- Grey Album. Holy shit. Take one part Jay-z's black album, one part the beetle's white album, and what do you get? dopeness. Dj dangermouse completely reworked the instrumentals of the beetles' white album to go with black album's lyrics to make a extremely interesting sounding cd, while still keeping to the essence of the black album.

Non-Phixion- The future is Now. Kinda like immortal technique. Kinda like Jedi mind tricks. Same product, different flavor.

And just to round it off ebcause i dont feel like typing anymore.

Check out anything from the RHymesayers, Def Jux, or Strange famous record label. If it's on any of them, I approve.

In "where'd you go," he's rapping about a family falling apart because one of the spouses is putting their career ahead of the family. That's not really the same as rapping about barbequing burgers and ribs.

And when 99% of rap artists rap about (1) their money and (2) their hoes, and he's rapping about, say, his grandfather's internment at Manzanar, or about breaking off a friendship with a long-time friend with an ever-increasing drug problem, no, I wouldn't say that he's merely catering to the general radio-listening audience. Yes, FM has mainstream success (and is thus automatically "uncool" with those who pride themselves with knowing underground artists), but FM is anything but cookie-cutter Top-40 rap.

I'll admit that his rhymes tend to be monosyllabic, but if you're looking at the form of his music (instead of the lyrical substance), the simplicity of the rhymes is made up for with the complexity of the instrumentals, which is head and shoulders above most rap today. As for lyrical substance, he's got more worthwhile things to say than any other mainstream-successful rap artist I can think of. If he's not your cup of tea, that's great, but saying that Fort Minor has nothing to offer is just BS.
