Looks like the rumor we posted yesterday is true. Porsche will indeed unveil the Cayenne GTS at Frankfurt next week. Positioned between the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo, the GTS is the first Cayenne to be equipped with the active suspension (PASM) combined with steel springs -- a configuration that, until now, was reserved for the automaker's sports cars. Its sits 24 mm lower than the S and its V8 gets a 20 hp bump to 405 horsepower. Visually, the GTS wears the same front and rear fascias as the Cayenne Turbo. It's also outfitted with 21-inch wheels and there are two new colors exclusive to it: GTS Red and Nordic Gold Metallic. A six-speed manual is standard equipment, with Tiptronic S optionally available. Look for the Cayenne GTS in showrooms in February 2008. US buyers should set aside $69,300 if they'd like to park one in their driveways

So...I like it.

That's pretty badass.

So, I was just wondering...anyone else having trouble accessing the Porsche website?

Except for the fact that it's:

(1) a "Porsche" without a flat six, and
(2) a super-sporty crossover SUV (read: wheels can't handle off-road stuff, and body is too tall and too heavy for true sporty driving. The worst of both worlds).

If I were in the market for a sporty wagon, this would be at the top of my list. There'd already be Cayman S in the garage for the weekends...

If I was in the market for a sporty wagon, I'd get a sporty wagon, not a crossover SUV. Something like an RS4 Avant with a six-speed manual. No matter how well it's tuned, there are certain fundamental shortcomings of a crossover SUV chassis.

It's a Porsche. Porsches defy physics and other stuff like that. That said, I just remembered there's now an M5 wagon...that's what I'd want if I really wanted a sporty wagon.

Good choice, except I think it only comes with an SMG. I'd much rather have the traditional manual of the RS4 Avant or, god forbid, the Cayenne GTS.

What the fuck is the purpose of this? Now they have 4 Cayenne models, oh wait no come to think of it they have 5 Cayenne models.
1) Cayenne
2) Cayenne S
3) Cayenne GTS
4) Cayenne Turbo
5) Cayenne Turbo S

Oh and lets not foget the Titanium Edition Cayenne S either.

There is no new Turbo S or Titanium Edition yet, so it's just V6, S, GTS, and Turbo.

And Mitlov. For starters, I really hate it when people say anything like "the 911 is the only true porsche" or "porsches are only air-cooled" or "it's not a real porsche if it doesn't have a flat-6." That's a load of bullshit. By those various logics, the 356 may not be considered a true porsche, or a 928, or a 944, or a Boxster or whatever. So I shit on that "argument". And I still think it's badass, because it looks cool and is supreme in its market segment and in its technical mastery, NOT because it can beat up on some super sport wagon.

I'm picturing you right now, and you look just like your avatar. Anyhow, I actually don't disagree with your point. It's okay if Porsche deviates from the design of the 911. I think the new mid-engined Porsches are awesome, even though they deviate from rear-engine expectations. I don't think my previous post really conveyed the point I was trying to make.

At the end of the day, a tarted-up Tuareg with a Porsche emblem is still lame in my mind. Imagine if Ferrari took a Land Cruiser, erased its off-road abilities, and gave six gajillion horsepower and handling equivalent to my Legacy. It'd be lame, and I'd have trouble calling it a Ferrari. That's what I see the Cayenne as being.

(As a disclaimer, I think that the Cayenne is critical to Porsche's economic survival, and that they couldn't have built the Cayman without the profits from the Cayenne. But that doesn't mean I have to like the Cayenne, or any sporty crossover).
clarkma5
I can understand calling the Cayenne a dilution of the brand, given its vehicle type and origins in the VW group, but you also have to look at it and realize that it is the best on-road and on-track performer in its segment while also being one of the most capable off-roaders around. It's an immense feat of engineering that deserves a helluva lot of respect. I don't think anyone besides Porsche could've pulled it off. In other words, I don't put it in the same light as a 911, Cayman, or Boxster, but to me it's far more than just a cash cow for the company.

Nothing like exaggeration with the Ferrari example. And I hope you're not being serious comparing the handling of the Cayenne to your Legacy. Read a review of any of the Cayenne line up...you'll realize you're sorely mistaken. I've only read good things about its road handling.

And for the dissing of the Cayenne's offroad abilities...check this site out: http://www.porsche.com/all/Transsyberia200...ernational.aspx (Watch some of the videos) Can't handle offroad stuff my asshole.

All that aside, this looks pretty good. I quite like it.

EDIT: That M5 wagon is terribly ugly.

Fuck the Cayenne!
McKhaos
$69.300 for a V8,all wheel drive, 6 speed manual car that can seat 5 comfortably and has a little ground clearance just in case ? That's excellent value for money.

I've warmed up to SMGs, Tiptronics, and the like.

I swear the M5 wagon looks better than that.
Asher
I see this as a horribly pointless waste of money and time for Porsche. People who buy Cayennes don't want a sports car and people who buy sports cars don't want a Cayenne.

Waste of money? This'll sell like hottcakes. Refer to thread --> http://forums.dieselstation.com/index.php?showtopic=22447

People with money to fling around buy everything. Sports car or not.
clarkma5
Yeah, plenty of people already own sports cars. They want an SUV to add to their garage because they think they're practical or impressive or whatever, but they don't just want any SUV, they want the fastest, the most impressive, and the coolest one on the block, because they're rich bastards who wear their wealth on their sleeve. For such a niche vehicle, this car has a relatively big market to sell to.

If they wanted the fastest, they'd get the Turbo. They typically wouldn't care much about handling or a 6-Speed or PASM.

Its not just about the performance, its more about the perception when it comes to cars such as these. For about 70 grand, you get a car that belongs in upper categories, is well equipped, has a V8, looks decent, and most of all, is very very imposing. I dont see why people with some money wont jump on it; its not necessarily catered to those who are insanely rich.

Exactly. It's such a status symbol. That's why I see so many of them around here. People can't necessarily afford them, I mostly only see the regular (non s or turbo) version around here. But you do see the tricked out ones occasionally, and that turns heads. Because now it's not just a Cayenne, it's not just a Cayenne S, it's a Cayenne GTS! It'll work.

Yes, but they wouldn't necessarily want a 6 speed. Or a harsher ride. Or the 'sporty' alcantara interior.
