Oh man... so hot...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=foyRRdicrIM

Just watch the very first overtaking manuver when Prost overtakes Senna and practically DORIFTO-OH-DORIFTS in the days before traction control which is apparently going to be banned in the next year or two.

The cars are bottoming out.

aka the downforce is pushing the car down to the point where the bottom contacts the road.

That's how Senna died, FWIW.

I couldn't watch with that music...

Except for the first pass, those were rather lame. :/

Great collection.

This video really shows why I think Mansell is one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time, he was a great driver who always pushed his cars to the limit and was always exciting to watch.

Overtaking in F1 FTW

Ok, PBB, I kind of agree with you.

A lot of Mansell's passes were very... rudimentary and nothing special.

I imagine this vote took place in England where Mansellmania or whatever is still a fond memory for some.

However, one fond overtaking manuver shown in that compilation was definitely the one of Mika overtaking Schumacher by squeezing on the inside of a backmarker while Michael was forced to go on the outside.

Mika doesn't miss you
leif
thats ok...I can still miss him...and his giving MS the finger as he passed!
DakianDelomast
F1 will never be better than it was with the turbo cars.
leif
so will you be haoppy when they bring back the turbo in 2010?
DakianDelomast
No because it will still be the same automotive circle jerk that it is today.

That was Coulthard, I believe. I could be wrong.

Some good ones, but I can think of 4 that should've made it in there too.

- Senna from Donnington in the wet through Craner Curves (don't know who he went by)
- Any from the battle between Prost and someone (I think) at Dijon-Prenois.
- Alonso overtaking someone through 130R at Suzuka.
- Montoya on Schumacher (?) at the Bus stop at Spa-Francorchamps.

Have to agree that this ^^^ battle will probably never be surpassed. Several great passes in the sequence, but it is the length of the duel rather than a particular pass that is most impressive, with both of them absolutely giving their all to beat the other.

The fact that they (Renι Arnoux in the yellow Renault Turbo and Giles Villeneuve in the red Ferrari) swopped places several times in each of several laps – complete with wheel-bumping and running wide off the track – and that both managed to get to the end is nothing short of amazing.

And when you consider what risks they were taking in the death-traps that those cars were back in 1979 (and still were in 1981 as Villeneuve showed sad.gif ), it almost defies belief.

I finally got to drive the Dijon Circuit this year. That makes the above battle even more unbelievable for me. They make it look easy, but I can tell you that even with a car a fraction of the performance they had, the track seems tight, twisty and bumpy. They were complete driving gods/nutters!

Here is the battle with live British TV commentary by the inimitable Murray Walker:

Don't think we can embed stuff here, can we? Tried, but no dice...

Arnoux and Villeneuve is the Dijon race I meant, simply awesome racing!

When were you there? I was there 20th of August with the Caterham. Unbelievable circuit, soooo nice to drive. I hope there is a repetition next year.

Yes, and the Villeneuve/Arnoux battle is still the best F1 fight in my books.

I was there for the first (and not the last, I hope) time on 9th October:

To be honest I found it a bit annoying what the Porsche driver did there. Which lap times could you drive when you had a free lap?

biggrin.gif Straying a little off topic now!

He's a Porsche driver – fast in a straight line...

Not really sure about the lap times – I'd have to look at the tapes, but I'm sure they were nothing spectacular. It was my first time there – took me a few laps to make sense of it – and for the rest of the day I was busy trying to work out the lines and braking points tongue_orig.gif

PBB's video was much better.

The Dori-dori pass was cool, but nothing especially amazing.
