Today out of nowhere my CPU started running at about 50% or higher all the time. I noticed it when I was playing a game and it was really laggy. I rebooted and its still the same. Here is all of my running processes.

BTW my memory is always that hight cause I only have 512

Its the Systems Idle thing thats fucking it up ... mines just sits there at 98% and hangs up my PC. Try rebooting it to see if that helps.
Keitero-sama
boot into safe-mode and see if it still 50%. if it is, try running a virus and spyware scanner. if not, try killing off the offending task in task manager to see if that will go away.

What the fuck its normal now. I didnt restart again or anything. I ate a few hotwings and it went down. I guess it was my puters way of telling me to stfu and eat ma wings.

yum.. hotwings... share the wealth!

Um... system idle, is just that, how much is IDLE. Thats not measuring how much resources its using, as the other tasks do. It just shows that so it always adds up to 100%. smile.gif

NOW YOU KNOW!

mines been 50%+ for a couple days now, i think its a virus but i dunno.

I've noticed that sometimes with mine, but it's never caused my computer to lag. Usually it'll just be some random thing for me, which was probably the case for you. Might want to run a spyware/adware scan though, although you probably don't need to.
Spike23
sad.gif I am guessing it might be a virus..
running at 50% is definitely odd and your even doing anything.
Try running the scans on the net those free ones.
Trend Mirco etc
Hope your problem gets fixed...since reformating might not always be the best case depending on your scenario at the next stage. So run the scan and see where you at after that.
Also get CWShredder that might help ya. Its free program that does sypware and some viruses.
But your best best is the free internet scans those are usuaully up to date.

I know it's a bump, but for anyone else with this problem, you've been hit with the lager trojan. I'm just taking a guess, seeing as there's a process in the taskmgr that says taskdir.exe using 50% of the CPU. To check whether you've been hit, head over to C:\Windows\ (maybe even C:\Windows\System32) and look for taskdir.exe AND taskdir.dll (If you can't see their extensions, go to tools/folder options/view (tab)/ and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" [and show hidden files while you're at it])
This thing is fairly new I think, since I started hearing about it in May.

ANYways, to get rid of it, follow these steps (AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!1!1! Registry editing is dangerous and can cause computer death, blah blah blah...you've heard the warnings)

Go into Safe mode (usually F8 while you're PC is booting, right before the windows splash screen)...if you need help PM me, and then do the following:
QUOTE
1. Open Registry Editor. Click Start>Run, type REGEDIT, then press Enter.
2. In the left panel, double-click the following:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Microsoft>
Windows>CurrentVersion>Run
3. In the right panel, locate and delete the entry:
taskdir = "%System%\taskdir.exe"
(Note: %System% is the Windows system folder, which is usually C:\Windows\System on Windows 98 and ME, C:\WINNT\System32 on Windows NT and 2000, or C:\Windows\System32 on Windows XP and Server 2003.)
4. Close Registry Editor.

If you don't want to fuck with your registry, this virus might store itself in your msconfig, in which case you can go to Start>Run... and type msconfig, press enter, select "Selective Startup," go to the startup tab, and look for anything that ends with taskdir.exe in the Command field.

Once you have stopped it from autostarting, you can just use http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ to find it and get rid of it when you're back into normal mode (out of safe mode).

And of course, if you need any help with virii...PM me, or other knowledgeable computer people on DS.
