2007 FORD SHELBY GT500 OFFICIALY RATED AT 500 HORSEPOWER
Published: May 2, 2006

(DEARBORN, MI) TheGT500Source.com - The most powerful factory-built Mustang ever just got even more potent. Final certification testing of the Shelby GT500's 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 shows it will produce 500 horsepower and 480 lb.-ft. of torque, 25 more horsepower than preliminary estimates.

With 500 hp and the Shelby name, this car is an instant legend," said Hau Thai-Tang, director, Advanced Product Creation & SVT programs. "This is the most powerful, most capable Mustang ever."

The Ford Shelby GT500's supercharged 5.4-liter, 32-valve V-8 is a result of Ford's experience in developing the modular V-8 and V-10 engine series. The engine is force-fed air via a "Roots-type" supercharger providing 9 pounds per square inch of boost. It borrows the four-valve cylinder heads, piston rings and bearings, from the Ford GT engine.

The 500 hp rating was obtained using the Society of Automotive Engineer's latest standard and was witnessed by an objective third party. The Shelby GT500's 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 will be built at Ford's Romeo Engine Plant in Romeo, Mich. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

The right to purchase the first 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 was auctioned for $600,000, with the proceeds benefiting the Carroll Shelby Children's Foundation. The 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 goes on sale this summer.

And how much does it cost? "Pricing is to be released early May." Watch this space for details. Megaman.gif

Sadly no IRS, but it looks fast and capable as-is. Bravo Ford.

My take on it: It's crude and loud like a muscle car should be. The previous blown Cobra took to bolt-on mods like no other and the new 5.4 should be even more impressive. Obvious downsides? This car is gonna be a complete lardass, almost 4,000 pounds for the coupe and as much as 4,400 for the 'vert. At the very least, it'll be fun watching the GM guys shitting themselves until the Camaro comes out in 2009.

I agree. Ford seems to have really come together on this project. I'd like to see one of these race a GT...

Jesus, that bad!? That's 500 pounds more than the GT!

3,920 pounds for the coupe is the number I just found.

Na seriously it looks great I love the latest mustangs, cant wait to see a GT500 for real.

This is my favorite Mustang in a long while. And the Shelby is just better. I guess the retro look, and obviously the improved performance, makes the newer model much more badass.

I absolutely love this car. I can't wait to see them on the road. dance.gif

I'll take a Z06, please. :O
infinity
Assuming pricing will be comparable to the Z06, I'm with Phix on this one. Z06 > GT500.
Randle2I
I'm thinking the price is going to undercut the Z06. Regardless of what you choose (Corvette or Mustang) you cant go wrong with 500+ hp for the price.
Boxster17
I can't imagine it'd be that close in price to the Z06, I imagine it'd be like 10k cheaper, I thought I heard it was thought to be in around 50k, and I thought a decently equipped Z06 ran a good 70k. Anyways, I'd take this over the Z06, much prefer the looks of this thing.
PBB
Pricing comparable to the Z?? This is the Mustang! The Ford GT is closer to being in the same halo car class as the $65K Vette. The GT500 will cost barely over 40K, even it does break that pricepoint. Like the last-gen Cobra, the GT500 will tangle with cars carrying a much larger price tag.

That said, I'd still pay the premium for the nearly half-ton lighter IRS-equipped car.
clarkma5
yeah, this is a base corvette fighter, not a Z06 competitor. it may have 100 more HP than the LS2-equipped 'vette but I'd be willing to bet that with that 700 pound deficit and more basic suspension it won't keep it together on the track.

I guess I'm getting less enthusiastic...it seems like nothing more than a mustang for mustang fans, and not a worthwhile competitor to anything.

Judging by the weight I think it just might be able to beat this other car... but just barely...

goota
hmmm weighs as much as an M5, has the same amount of power as an M5, hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

cool engine though thumbs_up.gif
Mitlov
Muscle cars aren't my cup of tea, but that's sweet. GM is really missing the boat by not releasing the Camaro until 2009.
