But the key was that there was no development work being done on a true successor to the RSX. Now it's official. In a communique that just breezed across the Acura Interactive Network, Dick Colliver has officially announced "In our quest to provide you and our customers with the very best and most appropriate Acura models, we have decided to eliminate the RSX from the 2007 line-up, thus streamlining our product offering to better fit with Acura’s evolving and more upscale image."
from vtec.net
anyone else saddened by this news? I know that Acura is a luxury brand, but there is no room for the RSX in the Honda line up.

no, you're thinking of the NSX.
The RSX is the cute little coupe that is starting to get into the hands of ricers now. Immensly satisfying driver's car though, can't believe acura's getting read of the integra-class car.

The Si is the new RSX. Acura wants to ditch the boy racers and let the TSX be its entry level car. Kinda sucks for the enthusiasts, but it makes sense.

That's too bad. I thought they could have done some work on the 2006 Civic Si's interior and bodywork, and come out with a real winner at about $23k. Plus, the RSX is really popular--I'm surprised they're retiring the name.

First Toyota killed off the Celica and replaced it with the Scion tC, now Honda thinks they can get rid of the Integra and replace it with a Civic coupe. Thank God, Mitsu and Hyundai still offer truly stylish, affordable, and decently capable coupes.

That has to be sarcasm (about the hyundai and mitsu)
And the Si is a totally worthy successor to the RSX...in fact, it's really almost the same car in a lot of ways, just less costly and with an LSD.

Yeah, but at least they look good. I mean I'm sure the Si is good and all, but still, the RSX was infinitely more stylish.

I have no idea what you're talking about. The Accord is hardly a "snooty" car. Most people I know who drive them are friendly folks who don't really care about cars, and just want something reliable and comfortable.

Within the Acura lineup, the NSX was the performance flagship while the RL was the luxury and technology flagship.

Yeah, I mean I don't like seeing the RSX go, but it didn't fit with Acura trying to go upmarket. Until Infinitis recent surge of new products, I thought Lexus was the only Japanese luxury brand that got it right. Now it seems that Acura is the only one that has it wrong. They're kind of a halfass premium brand, a step-up from a Honda or a Toyota, but still a step-down from Lexus, BMW, etc. Kind of like Saab, Volvo, and VW... still, they should bring the Integra back as part of the Honda line-up, or maybe a new CRX or del Sol or something.

Not that my opinion matters in the grand scheme of automotive marketing, but many of my favorite brands and cars occupy that sorta "not-quite luxury" area of the market...including Acura. I can't tell if liking Acura is causing me to say that, or if that's why I like Acura.

I wasn't counting the NSX and S2000 (and the S2000 is a honda) as they are expensive sports cars. I ment sporty boy racer types. And yeah I walk by about 6 or so RSXs on average just in the parking garage. And the TSX.. just no.
The RSX is kinda a vestige branch of their chassis line, would make sense for Acura to drop it and try to move upscale to make more room for honda underneath.

Seconded. I'm thinking about the brands that occupy that niche--perhaps Acura, VW, and Volvo--and I like all of 'em. More rewarding for drivers than your typical non-luxury cars, but not sacrifice-everything-else-to-make-the-payments expensive either.

No, not really. For $34,000, you get:
Midsize luxury sedan
260hp, 258ft-lb turbo engine
Manual transmission
Leather upholstery
Genuine walnut trim
Power seats w/ driver memory
Heated seats
Harmon-Kardon sound system w/ 6CD changer
17" alloy wheels
It competes very nicely with the Acura TL and the Passat V6, in price, amenities, and performance. Certainly no BMW-esque premiums involved. Last time I checked, the 5-series started at roughly $50,000.

When the Saab 9-5 was introduced in 1999, its MSRP ranged from $31,000 to $38,000. Or are we talking about a different Saab than the 9-5? I thought we were talking about the 9-5 because of Frederf's comment
"The last time I asked Matt "What's the price of a 9-5?" I nearly shit myself."Edit--the 9-5 was actually introduced in 1997, according to Wikipedia, but other internet sources seem to say that the first year was 1999.

It seems to me like dropping the RSX may be a good move for Acura in terms of trying to increase their "luxury" image, but it's got to be a risky, if not bad, move financially. I see so many RSXs on the road I can't imagine it being a good financial move. Maybe after they drop the relatively inexpensive RSX they'll jack the price of their other "luxury" cars up more since they'll have that luxury image they're looking for.
