so ive been having a lot of oblivion issues lately and flawless suggested a defrag program for me. this made me realize that its probably been a year since my last defrag. i think this may be the real issue behind my oblivion crashes...

im surprised anything works at this point!
Once a month, at least. My Vinders2000 has crashed maybe twice in the last 3 years.

Perfect Disk 7 is what I use and which I think is the best defragger out there. i have it set on schedule, so every morning at 6am I think it is it runs through my disks. That way it's always running smoothly and since I run it that often it takes practically no time to defrag.

I'm pretty inconsistent about it, but I don't think I've ever gone past 6 months without a defrag. When I'm more on top of it I do it every 2 months or so.

What exactly does defragmentation do? Also, I was always under the impression that it was overrated, and didn't really accomplish much...

What do you mean exactly? Like moving them from the folders they were in to elsewhere?
WTF program do you use?

I use the windows version and it moves some of my files into folders I don't want them in.

thats funky ... its supposed to move the files from one location on the physical hdd to another and not change the damn directory structure.
My mac never needs a defragging

Nothing beats Power Defragmenter
QUOTE
Power Defragmenter is based on Sysinternals defragmentation "engine".
Basically its just a very advanced GUI for the Sysinternals core application which takes defragmentation process to a whole new level.
Very high defragmentation speed, efficiency and ease of use.
Such high speed is only available with Sysinternals defragmentation "engine".
Fastest thing that does it properly out there.

i use O&O defrag also. but i schedule it to auto defrag everyday.
you might also want to use Cleanup! 4.0 to clear the temp files..

Windows Defragger is absolute garbage. It's barely effective... get O&O or maybe Diskeeper.

I like Power defrag GUI for speed also, but I use it on computers that have never (or rarely) been defragged. Like Boxter said, once it's defragged regularly, it takes a minute to do it again so I let O&O handle it because of the wonderful interface. Dirms and buzzsaw do the same thing, but look like anus while their at it. I will try Perfectdisk eventually, as a result of the accolades in here.
Oh, and bankie...you
officially owe me your life for the recommendation. Pay up already!

Seriously though, 45.75%...let me make that clearer for anyone that missed it...
45.75%!!!!11!1! If that's not illegal, it should be. I thought 5% was high.

Is Oblivion running any smoother?

use CLEANUP! 4.0
clear the temp files.. then restart O&O again.. it will do alot faster..

so my oblivion problems are beginning to become clear...
(file/# of fragments)
C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data\Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa - 13,653
C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data\Oblivion - Meshes.bsa - 9,117
C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data\Oblivion - Sounds.bsa - 4,917

also, it seems as though a lot of my fragmenting occurs in large .avi/.wmv files. ive managed to wrangle it under 30% in the past couple hours, haha

Yeah try and run some cleanup program every once in a while. Even windows Disk Cleanup will help out. Another good program I use is Registry Mechanic which just clears out unnecessary registry files. Another good cleaner program is CCleaner, which seems to be recommended quite a lot by people.
