(DETROIT, MI) - A 5-year-old boy called 911 to report that his mother had collapsed in their apartment, but an operator told him he should not be playing on the phone, and she died before help arrived.

The family of Sherrill Turner, 46, does not know whether a swifter response could have saved her life, but relatives want to know why the operator apparently treated the call as if it were a prank.

Police said the 911 response was under investigation.

Turner's son, Robert, placed two calls to 911 after his mother collapsed Feb. 20 on the kitchen floor. During one of the calls, an operator said: "You shouldn't be playing on the phone."

In a tape of the call, parts of which were broadcast by Detroit-area television stations, the operator said: "Now put her on the phone before I send the police out there to knock on the door and you gonna be in trouble."

In an audio of the tape played on TV, some of what the boy says is unintelligible.

Delaina Patterson, the eldest of Turner's 10 children, said police did not arrive until three hours later. She said only Robert and his mother were home at the time.

Detroit police spokesman James Tate said it was at least an hour before authorities arrived, but he said he did not have details. By that time, the boy's mother had died, he said.

"The operator may have believed he was playing on the phone," Tate said.

The 911 operator remains on the job amid the investigation.

Am I the only one who can't believe that something like this can happen. All calls to 911 should be treated seriously, and because of this operator wouldn't believe this kid, he's no motherless. I really hope that the operator pays for what happened somehow.

Im not sure of the protocol of the Fire Dept, or EMS service, but everywhere I know of treats every 911 call seriously. They may not run hot to the scene on all calls but a call as serious as this would definatly be a run with a medic and ALS engine no questions asked in my area. Id be willing to bet that what ever jurisdiciton that was in has standing protocol to require a response from at least a medic unit and the dispatcher probably wasnt doing thier job.

Every 911 call should be treated seriously, there's no denying that (well, an obvious prank like somebody calling and asking "is your refrigerator running!?" is different). That operator should be reprimanded and relieved of their duties.
Boxster17
Yeah I mean there's are some obvious things like that, which can be ignored, but I don't see how the kid telling them that his mother is passed out on the kitchen floor could be interpretated as a prank. And that's 10 children there without a mother now, not to mention how horrible it must've been for that kid to see his mom dying like that.

Oh. My. God.

I thought when you call 911 they automatically trace the call to the address? This is fucking stupid and absolutely ridiculous. God Dammit, why is Detroit so fucked up?

Sure, they gave us the Ford GT... but COME ON!

Actually, that was Dearborn, Michigan. Detroit gave us Eminem.

The operator should be in jail.

Yeh, she should be at least penalized or something for what she did. Essentially, she's responsible for that woman's death.

The Hip Hop Mayor of Detroit, Kwame Kilpatrick has fucked up the motor city so badly that they may never get out of the hole....

While he was laying off cops, firefighters and EMS personnel, he created thousands of "family and friends" jobs for his supporters, bought himself a Navigator and his wife an Escalade on the taxpayer's dime, and increased his security force to 23, yes 23 cops, which he took from the streets in a crime ridden city.

I saw the video and heard the audio of the kid talking to the reporter.... at least they can't play the "race card" in the investigation.

I have a few friends on the DFD... they are counting the days to retirement, if Kwame doesn't fire them first.
PBB
Gonzo, I agree completely, their mayor is one of the shadiest politicans in modern times. That entire city is just a complete mess anymore.

i always thought a 911 call was pretty much an instant police visit unless you spend 5 minutes on the phone convincing them that your dumbfuck friend dialed it and thought the call wouldnt go through if he immediately hung up. X.gif

In my community... every 911 call is investigated. We do have the 911 hangups, a cruiser is sent to investigate.

Three weeks ago , we had a 911 call with no response. A cruiser was sent, and by looking in the window, they found a man down on the floor. He called for Fire and EMS to respond.

It turned out he guy had passed out from a diabetic reaction. The guys on the Engine company had to force entry, and it saved the guys life, as his blood sugar level was so low it wouldn't register on the glucoase meter.

If King Kwame hadn't decimated the ranks of the Detroit PD, they could have answered the call sooner.

PS: the dispacthed shoud be terminated.

I called 911 when I was like 8 years old once just so I could hang up when they picked up...we got an immediate call back from them, which my brother picked up, and once the operator made sure nothing was wrong he passed on a verbal reprimand to me through my brother...but yeah, that operator did call back immediately. I would like to think that if nobody had picked up when he called back that they would've sent somebody out to check.

Why would you toy with an essential life service such as the 911 operator?

He was 8 years old.

When I was 6 I used to call death threats to my local video rental shack. He threatened cops so I stopped.

I was 6 years old. I was still learning. Hell, at that time I thought my neighbours third-gen Camaro was the fastest car in the world and I vowed to myself that I will own it one day.

I'm sorry to hear that laugh.gif

Haha, mine's even worse than that...my neighbor had a red 1989 Chrysler LeBaron convertible that I thought was so awesome that I promised to wash it every week until I was 16 if they would give it to me and they agreed. I actually kept up my end of the bargain for like 3 months too laugh.gif

laugh.gif that's priceless, clark. hatred of corvettes and mustangs was instilled into me at a very young age, so, i never had any lust for american cars.

Nah, the american cars was almost all of what I got (in terms of cool stuff) when I was young. My neighbor had a pristine '64.5 red Mustang Convertible and my other neighbor (same guy with the LeBaron, actually) restored a '68 Mustang Coupe and built it up for Hot August Nights (it was gorgeous, frankly) and then did a '73 Corvette. Plus most of my dad's car knowledge was in old American cars, though he also liked Porsches and BMWs through his experiences with friends' cars (a 911E and a 2002, respectively) in the late '60s. It wasn't until Porsche Unleashed hit that I cared much about anything that wasn't American.

911 Operators don't always know the name and address people are calling from these days. Quite a few people are moving to cell phones instead of a landline phone and most cellphones just call to their customer service who will then transfer them to the nearest 911 call center. Ive actually called 911 before and it transfered me to the next county, then they had to transfer me back to the county I was in.

Actually from a cellphone, about all they get is the phone number and which cell area that the person calling from is in. The cell tower that they're connected to directs them to the local 911 station or whatever it is in that county.

With cellphones you don't even have to have it activated or have a sim card to call 911.

I feel the same way...in a job where one of the guidelines are to treat every call like it is a reality (at least I thought that), this operator failed miserably.
dukenukem
People who use newer Verizon and Sprint phones have E911 by which the operator will know exactly where you are ... regardless of you telling them ...but most tinfoilers block out this service due to concern for their privacy.

And yes, the operator definately broke the law and should be jailed.

Yeah, He's in the news a lot here. There's also the scandal of his restaurant bills, his purple lincoln navigator among other things. But, they voted him into office for a second time! The reason I say 'they' is because I can't vote and I dont' live close enough to be in the city.
