There is a thread where arnge is protesting my avatar . I wanted to get my 2 cents in there , but Cyclone closed it before I could do it . Oh well , I'm gonna talk here .
First of all , I don't have a problem with Islam in particular . I despise all religions (including Christianity - into which I was baptised without my consent when I was like 3 months old ) . I believe religion , in all shape or form , is evil . Some of the greatest mass murders of humanity were acomplished in the name of some god . Ironic , huh ?
Secondly , arnge , this avatar has been up for like a month now . If you would have had a problem with it , you should have brought it up then . There should be some statues of limitations on these things . If you're bringing it up now , it's probably because you're an attention whore .
Thirdly , dukenukem has had a Buddy Jesus avatar for months now . Most christians would find it offensive . NOBODY has complained . Why ? I don't know .

In conclusion , I'm gonna keep my avatar until I'm gonna find one I like more . In the meantime , get used to the idea .

Not gonna lie, I lol'd on that one.

Personally, I love his avatar. I hope that through this incident, maybe some Muslims can begin to develop what the Jews call a "sense of humor."

Well I think the view of organised religion as being "evil" is pretty narrowly minded. Unfortunately religion, as with all functions in society, has its own defined purpose. Its just that purpose is abused at times.

Sadly many humans can not make independent moral judgements. They lack a definition of right and wrong and often times need someone to tell them *what* is right and *what* is wrong. The state can only enforce so much. Murder is wrong because you get thrown in jail for it according to the state, but murder is wrong according to religion because you're removing a soul and "God's creation" from the realm of existance.

Without religion there would be only two real options. One is that moral fabric of society would shred and things would literally fall apart. Or a worse case is that governments would start to take over the role of imposing morals upon society.

I don't know about you McKhaos, but I would rather have a relatively powerless organization telling me what is wrong than having a government IMPOSE on me what is wrong.

The main problem with organized religion is the simple fact that its made and run by humans, so it is corruptable. But anything that is run by humans is corruptable. My girlfriend is VERY muchly a catholic. And while catholism is one of my least favorite religions sometimes, she follows it in a very constructive manner. It provides a gridwork to give her direction and makes her own judgements and interpretations from there. There are many people who participate in an organization that are like this. I just wish there were more of them.

The way I see it , religion has been slowing mankind's progress . Just look at the dark ages , where people were burnt at the stakes because they said the Earth revolved around the Sun . Or now , with this whole stem cell issue . Many brilliant minds consider that this could be the next great step in medicine , but because the religious circles have a problem with taking cells from aborted fetuses , nobody can do it . It's just a dead piece of meat , people . Imagine it's the steak you cook on sunday . Which brings me to abortion . A woman (or couple) should have the right to do that . What's better ? Not to be born at all or to live a life of shit because your parents didn't want you in some shithole orphanage . And while we're on the subject , why don't all these "pro-life" groups adopt crack babies from the hood ? I guess the miracle of life isn't that holy over there .
But I'm getting sidetracked here . Religion should not interfere in the lives of individuals who don't want it . States should draw laws that guarantee each person's rights and that have stiff penalties for the infringement of other people's rights .
In conclusion , I'm reminded of a quote ( I forget who said it) : "Grown men arguing over religion is like little kids arguing about who has the best immaginary friend."

Well if it werent for religion how could we drive ourselves bankrupt every year buying overpriced toys under the name of Christmas, Chanukah, Eid, Diwali ...

And dont forget the holidays too ...

Like I said, any thing good can be corrupted and religion is no exception. However it is a nessisary in many reguards. I would not say that organized religion is evil, its just a bit misguided at times.

We have a bit of an issue in the States at the moment with the boundry between religion and state being a bit fuzzy. You can thank the Neo-Conservatives for that bit. But they aren't a product of religion, they're a product of corruption.

Corruption is evil. Corruption kills people and impedes progress. Corruption can spread like a plague if left unchecked.

I don't have really much to add to this thread but I have to say I fully agree with every word that McKhaos said above.

I know a girl whos friend (whos dads whos sister whos dog once said that this one girl...) was in the hospital dying. All she needed was a fucking blood transplant or whatever but her religion was against it, so her parents LET HER DIE BECAUSE OF THEIR RELIGION!!!

I'm not about to be so broad and sweeping as to say that religion is bad in every possible way...it has, notably, positively influenced many members of society who have pulled the morality out of it (which they needed because they lacked the will to be moral on their own I guess...)

But religion is overall, beyond the veneer of politics and corruption, just a mechanism by which to manipulate the masses...to ostracize non-conformers and push a moral and political ideology. To those who can bring something positive out of it, I have to applaud it...but as an overall institution, I can only call it fundamentally evil, at least in the sense that is is actively counterproductive to individual liberty, free thought, and logical reason.

We had a patient lose a foot because his family was Amish and they wouldnt allow him to fly in a helicopter to a more skilled facility than ours.

edit: oh and heres the kicker, the kid lost the foot because it got caught in a GAS POWERED log splitter.
