Full Version: The 19" LCD question

Okay, so it's time for a change, I'll keep this short

Basically I want your suggestions/opinions

Things to consider:

-Price should be in the 350-450$ CAN
-I'll use it mainly for Internet, Videos/TV and Gaming so a fast screen with good viewing angle is a must

Another subquestion would be, what do you guys think of the 16:10 screens? Practical or not? a good idea?

Here's a list of the screens that I'm considering (in order of consideration)

Samsung 930B
Viewsonic VA1912wb (16:10)
Acer AL1916ASD
Benq FP91G+
Samsung 940B (price explains why it's that low)
Viewsonic VX924

Suggestions, comments, opinions on those?

Would a pixel pitch of 0.264mm be noticeably better than a 0.294 one?

Thanks for your time

I have a Samsung 930B and I love it. My other suggestion would be the Hyundai L90D+.
Boxster17
Yeah I have a Hyundai L90D+ and have absolutely no complaints...been using the screen for 6+ months now and love it. I'm not really sure on what else there is though, I just ended up searching around for reviews and the Hyundai L90D+ seemed to fair extremely well in pretty much every review I read and I game quite a bit and experience no noticeable ghosting.

I have a 914v, the slower version of the 930B (i never game), and would suggest the 930, as I really like mine.

Supposedly I'm supposed to see ghosting, but I've played Quake on here, and didn't notice any at all.

And its cheap too smile.gif

Viewsonic would be my first choice, with the Samsung 930B coming in a close second

I heart.gif my Samsung 930b.

samsung 915n for me. got it on newegg and its been perfect since purchase.

I think I might seriously consider a widescreen though.. guys at finalgear.com made me drool about it

but there isn't much choice in 19"'s Widescreens :\

as for the hyundai I found some reliability issues so I'm not considering it anymore, but the Samsung still is my top choice for a non widescreen LCD..
CRiZO
I've never seen a reasonably priced widescreen that didnt have uneven backlighting issues. Not a fan of them at all. Just get dual 19"s if you want to drop that kinda dough.
Renesis
I'm not looking to spend that much..

and from what I've read the Viewsonic VA1912wb does suffer from it but it's not as bad as some non widescreen ones namely some Samsungs (forgot the model names though, but the 930b is said to have that problem too)

So I guess I'll have to live with it anyway..

Being an ex-gamer, I used to refuse using LCD monitors because of the lag it causes, and poor refresh rates. I recently got the Samsung 930b and I absolutely love it. No LCD lag at all. All my games look good, and normal viewing of videos and webpages and graphics is really nice too. The only thing i don't like is the fact that LCDs still don't use a high enough refresh rate, but it's definately bearable. DVDs look good. I'd recommend this monitor to anybody.
Boxster17
LCDs have plenty high refresh rates I think, mine does 75Hz, and I think I only was running maybe 85Hz on my CRT before, so I don't really think it's that big of a deal.

And what problems with Hyundai did you hear about, because as far as I know they use the same screens as Samsung and I believe Viewsonic.
clarkma5
Yeah, to my knowledge the L90D+ and the 930B actually have the same screens.

Refresh rates on LCD's are not a great means of comparison. Almost all LCD's have a default refresh rate of 60 Hz and show no flicker at that frequency. This is because pixels on LCD's are not shot onto the screen like a CRT. The more relevant comparison is response time. If a pixel on an LCD can go from white to black to white in 8ms, it is (generally) considered better looking than one that can do it in 25ms. Anything below 16ms is great, and will show little ghosting, but beware of response times that some monitors claim since they are not w-b-w, but actually gray to gray.
clarkma5
^^ Well said, flawless.

Actually, LCD manufacturers are all consistently optimistic in their response time measurements, so at the very least you can use them to compare them to each other very easily...an 8 ms from one manufacturer is almost certainly going to be faster than a 12 ms from another, even though the 8 ms monitor will never be able to go from white to black or vice versa in 8 ms.

I currently have a 17" Samsung and i love it to death. They make a quality product. That being said i really want a 16:10. They just look badass and give you a considerable amount of extra screen realistate

I have 3 LG LCD 17" screens and 1 samsung.

One lg once fuked up the the power supply but got RMA =)

What reliability issues did you find with the L90D+? I've had mine for over a year now and not a single problem with it. No dead pixels or nothing.
leif
get the Sharp LLM17W1R.

I have had it for almost a year...no complaints...no problems...its a wide screen...and it has a tv tuner!

I play BF2 on it, and never have any issues with ghosting.

Hyundai L90D+ I have one, my friend has two. Huge contrast, 8 or 9ms latency. All the "not for gaming" crud you've heard about ghosting or latency does not apply to this monitor. It's also like $270 now I think.

Dell 1907FP

ViewSonic VX series.
