Talk Picks Up
Momentum building for production version of concept Jeep truck

CHICAGO - Will Jeep get a pickup?

Frank Klegon, the Chrysler group's executive vice president for product development, says enthusiasm at the company remains high for a production version of the Jeep Gladiator concept pickup that debuted at the 2005 Detroit auto show.

"That is pretty hot," Klegon said at the auto show here. "I like the Gladiator. I think it is real cool. That (concept) was built on a product base, it has a platform, and that has a much better chance of seeing the light of day than something that doesn't. It is a pretty interesting execution."

The Gladiator concept was built on the redesigned vehicle platform for the 2007 Jeep Wrangler, Klegon said. The 2007 Dodge Nitro, a compact SUV that was introduced at the Chicago show, uses the same platform.

But while the Gladiator's stock is high, a convertible version of the four-door Chrysler 300C has lost favor with executives at the company.

"There is a lot of emotional excitement about (the convertible), but it is a very tough business case," Klegon said. "It is reasonably expensive to do, and the longevity of it is questionable."

I agree with DaimlerChrysler's executives. The Gladiator would be a great seller. It's a tough-guy image-truck, and it has genuine off-road ability. Win-win. And a Chrysler 300 convertible is a dumb idea. Glad they axed it.

Now maybe DaimlerChrysler needs to teach some business sense to Ford and GM to help get them out of the red.

External Rollcage, Black wheels and accents instead of chrome, a lightbar, and you've got yourself a mean lookin machine.
McKhaos
Kickass .
BankieVR6
a chrysler 300 convertible would have sold like crazy! rappers love themselves a ragtop, and the 300C is basically the staple of all non-platinum rappers.
Windshield
It would be the coolest pickup truck on the market.

lol you're a troll lol. If you're looking for the best bang-for-the-buck deal and are willing to take a step-down in reliability from Honda/Toyota and a step down in refinement from the European brands, American cars are the way to go. From the Corvette to the Magnum to the Silverado.

Hey, leave my family history out of this! Of course American cars are rarely the best bang-for-buck or the most reliablility/quality. But if you noticed I mentioned style, like sunglasses and surfboard style. If you want something with that kinda emotion American cars have that (and pretty much) only that going for them. So this is an American car that has done one of American cars' strengths very well.

Please grow a brain before typing. kthxbye

yeah american cars only have styling going for them. that slowass Z06 that handles like a boat is just a pretty face

Shut up you Z06 fanboy.

Shut up you Z06 fanboy.

that slowass '03-'04 cobra, all it has is styling

that slowass grand national

that slowass ford GT

etc...

list of things american car companies cannot seem to get down: interior design, build quality (although it is getting better by leaps and bounds), interior materials

list of things they can: performance....and sometimes styling, sometimes

You need to learn to read. I said that American cars ARE best bang for the buck, not that they aren't. You're not going to find another car under $50,000 that can accelerate and handle with a new Corvette. You're not going to find a V8 RWD wagon for anything remotely like $30,000 coming from Europe or Japan. You can get a V6 Pontiac G6 at about the same price as a four-cylinder Honda Accord--similarly equipped. Et cetera.

DZ--I actually like the interior design of the new Pontiacs. I've heard that they're still using cheap materials, but I really like the way the dashes of the G6 and the Solstice look.

Yeah, to be honest, I think the Grand Prix and Grand Ams especially in recent years are some nice looking cars. Not great but not ugly but not mediocre either... just a notch above. The gauge clusters for the Pontiacs are pretty cool, too.

That's about where my like for Pontiac starts and ends, as well. Besides that, I hate 'em. Not to mention they're so shitty. GM issued a bullentin to all Sunoco gas stations (I work at Sunoco, btw) saying to not allow Grand Ams into the car wash cause it'll rip off the side mirrors. There're are only two screws holding the side mirrors up. This only applies to the double-stemmed side mirrors on the Grand Ams and Grand Prixs.

The Corvette and the Accord are like two of the biggest outliers in their respective countries.
