FINALLY IT'S ON THE WEBSITE. God.
Bah, and we americans get a typically lame selection of colors. Where's blue for crissakes?
hurray for standard xenons and optional moonroof; As for the sport seats, phix, I see no inference that the sport seats are incompatible with the cloth. They are listed as standard features...though if you want lumbar and power adjustment you do need leather, but that stuff's for pussies anyway.
And woohoo for standard 6-disc changer! It's official, VW has made every last thing I wanted standard and everything I don't want is optional. That is SUCH a relief.
I do like the error for the sport suspension... "adjustable air suspension creates a smooth ride over all kinds of surfaces, and at different speeds..." haha no. That's just wrong, as the GTI doth not have this. You figured VW would catch such a grievous error...
As for the specs: Whoa, the drag coefficient went UP over the MkIV (by .01, but still). AND THE FUCKING CURB WEIGHT IS 3,308 POUNDS!!?!?!?!?!?!!?!
FUCK YOU VOLKSWAGEN.

The
2007 Passat wagon is also up. Looks like there will be no Jetta wagon anymore. Though I'm probably the only person here who particularly cares about that.
The new Passat wagon is gorgeous. Shame the
value edition is over $25,000, though, and a normally equipped 2.0T is pushing $30,000. Volkswagen needs a new name--it's no longer the "People's Car."

Are you going to trade in for the new one? Go for GTI #3?

Actually, to be totally honest, I didn't expect them to. If their electronics are buggy, why should their website be spotless? Volvo's webpage is predictably full of errors as well. I expect Subaru and Honda's websites to be problem-free, but not VW's or Volvo's.

the sports seats are leather only, and only available on Pkg2 cars.
The standard seats are an improvement over the regular jetta/golf seats (like mine) but not as good as the heavily bolstered leather ones. They are interlagos plaid.
Europe, of course, gets interlagos plaid high bolster sport seats.
Fuck europe.

FUCK YOU VOLKSWAGEN.
look at the engine specs though:
Engine displacement: 2.0L
Engine horsepower: 200hp @ 5,100RPM
Engine torque: 207 lb.-ft. @ 1,800RPM
that engine is torquey maximum torque at 1,800 rpms that thing must pull hard, I also wonder about the the torque steer....
also these Hufweisen Alloy wheels, what are they? $750 is a not a bad price for a 18" alloys, kind of ugly though
clarkma5
Feb 9 2006, 04:36 PM
Yes, I know the engine makes those specs.
But look at what the 1.8T does:
HP: 180 HP @ 5500 RPM
TQ: 174 lb.-ft. @ 1950 RPM
The 2.0T isn't a huge leap forward power wise, then, and the weight cancels out nearly all gains. The 18s are $750, yeah, and they are nice wheels but with the higher US ride height, the 18 inch wheels is just a way to make the car look like it's on stilts. 17s are where it's at.
Personally I'm quite dissapointed, but it still looks like it could be a good car for my mom. The silver is disturbingly classy looking.

I agree with Clark here, I hated new Golf design until I have seen it in person. I want to test drive one, I suppose I will when I get some free time. As for the ride height, you can always get a nice suspension kit for it.
Clark, hows the torque steer on your GTi? Since my Golf is completely devoid of any power, it does not seem to have any.

Feb 9 2006, 07:41 PM

clarkma5
Feb 9 2006, 09:48 PM
Well, if you were gonna pay for the GT package MPS6, why not just get a GTI with leather? It's about $4000 less and you do get a lot of fun toys for your extra $3000 in options, like moonroof, automatic climate control, satellite radio, and heated seats. And even though the GTI has a lot less power than the Mazdaspeed 6, due to its lesser weight and smaller size it's about as quick, and will most likely prove to be more refined.
I mean, the reason I'm pissed about the sport seats is because I really want the cloth. If you're gonna go leather anyway, then the sport seats have no effect on you because the awesome seats come when you buy the leather.
ALSO, an aside, I'm hopeful the GTI weighs less than 3308 pounds because I just realized that the GTI's spec sheet is identical to the GLI's in terms of weight and stuff when in reality the GTI is a lighter car! Car & Driver says 3178 pounds, which is still more than 200 pounds more than the MkIV but still...lighter than what I thought.

You guys do realize that the GTi has been around for a little while now right? Because while the US got the Jetta first, the rest of the world got the reverse. The first one I saw in Saudi has now been around for six months or more. Don't worry about it being fun to drive, they say it's the best GTi from VW in quite some time.

Autocar's
roadtestYes we know. It's been out nearly 2 years in some parts of the world, and the Golf will be nearly 3 years old before it hits our shores; it's stupid, and it's all because VW wanted the Jetta and the Passat to make it to the US first because they're the volume sellers, even though the Golf and GTI were ready well beforehand.
As for the reviews, I don't trust reviews because I have a tendency to disagree with the motoring press. I shan't be satisfied until I drive it myself and render my own verdict.

It has nothing to do with me! When Labour first came into power, people were expecting a change to taxes, which there was, I couldn't vote, so I had nothing to do with the current tax situation.
The party in power before that were the Conservatives, who laid everyone out with so much tax that me and my family nearly lost our house! So we don't want them back (except to up the National speed limit and take a few speed cameras away).
And as for the Lib Dems, well they don't seem to have it all together yet, but they're gaining popularity.
Still my point is that this tax on fuel situation is not my fault at all
