i dont get it... maybe cause i am super tired but IIUC, coke union workers are being killed because they have good jobs? sounds like coke did somone a favor that killed em... so what if they dont offer protection for their workers... its obviously a high risk job and if union work is enough to kill over down there it sounds like they get paid enough too... or i am missing somthing here?

Feb 1 2006, 09:21 PM
hah, good jobs? far from it...
anyways coke basically sends guys from colombia to fort benning (School of the Americas) to get trained in paramilitary tactics and other things such as interrogation techniques, psychological warfare and such. then these guys come back to colombia and are basically hired by coca cola as 'bodyguards' and are used by the company to disrupt labor unions organizations. workers are being killed, kidnapped, tortured because they dare to organize and form a union to advocate for better wages and working conditions for them and their fellow workers.
My friend just gave a presentation about this to a club i am in, MEXA de calpoly, anyways I wanted to hear your guys opinions on it.
and its not like these are crazy allegations against coca cola anyways, a court in florida has charged some plants with these crimes although only the plants and not the actual coca cola company.

I drink Coca-Cola more than I do Pepsi.
I doubt there is anything anyone can really do about this. Columbia has been in the gutter for quite some time and to be honest this isn't THAT surprising to me. Really, Coca-Cola will probably just block out all this bitchery by stuffing their ears full of their billions upon billions of dollars and go on with their lives.

^its sad but probably true.
Coca-cola apparently has an 80% market share of the beverage industry in Colombia, this says something about how the pockets of the politicians get filled down in colombia.

phix is correct. because the colombian government doesnt allow opportunities for union establishment i dont think is cokes fault. but like ANY movement or...the word escapes me...like this there are losses. whatever... i like coke. and goota, i HIGHLY doubt you will stop drinking coke because of this. coke makes 167 billion a year... they dont give a fuck about Jose Cuervo in Columbia getting offed cause he wants a union... they'll just go buy somthing instead. the people that started that website, if they make a big enough stink about it, will probably be payed off but if and only if the negative earnings that they produce out weighs the amount required to pay them off...

dont be a sarcastic martyr... we see that it sucks but making a thread on here aint gonna do shit about it... if you really care, which i doubt you even care enough to stop drinking coke products, then DO somthing about it.

i am doing something about, i am trying to show people on this forum what is really happening down there. Knowledge is power, the more people know, the more people might care. the only thing I care about is that at least one person will read this thread and maybe go do some research on their own, and then maybe try to educate others on the subject or similar subjects.
and who told you the colombian government doesnt allow labor unions? theyve had unions in colombia for quite a while although suppressed by paramilities as previously stated.
you dont know me, and yes I do plan on stopping on drinking coke its other products, why give them money to fund violent acts on innocent men/women/children who are just trying to survive, even if its just a dollar, i dont care, they arent getting it from me, i know it wont have a millionth of a percent on their profit, but i dont care, its a matter of principle. dont accuse me as if you know me.

haha i am not one to disagree with you. but really, i dont believe in the little guy. it takes A LOT to make a difference especially when dealing with a powerful company like coke... i mean if coke said "hey goota i'll give you one billion dollars to never speak of this again" you're telling me you wouldnt take it? cause... i am not gonna lie i sure as shit would.

I have considered that myself, maybe its a ploy by pepsi? or who else? i dont know, either way, there is definitely documented evidence in the US court system of (some of) these events, maybe some of it is B.S.'d, maybe 90% of it is, but there is still the fact that these events do happen and have happened before.

This seems so far fetched. Columbians can't even elect local officials without the candidates getting killed off. What makes anyone think even without Coca Cola they could organize unions? I'd hope this is not true while I sit here in my nice comfy chair in a sovereign society sipping my ice cold refreshing Coke. Besides everyone knows it's the articifical caramel flavoring that makes Coke the best!
