QUOTE
Prime minister-designate Stephen Harper took aim at the American ambassador's criticism of the Conservatives' Arctic sovereignty plan on Thursday, in the party leader's first news conference since winning a minority government.

"The United States defends its sovereignty and the Canadian government will defend our sovereignty," Harper told reporters in Ottawa. "It is the Canadian people we get our mandate from, not the ambassador of the United States."
Prime minister-designate Stephen Harper, Thursday.

A day earlier, David Wilkins, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, said his government opposes Harper's proposed plan to deploy military icebreakers in the Arctic to detect interlopers and assert Canadian sovereignty over those waters.

"There's no reason to create a problem that doesn't exist," Wilkins said as he took part in a forum at the University of Western Ontario in London.

"We don't recognize Canada's claims to those waters... Most other countries do not recognize their claim."

During the federal election campaign, which culminated in Harper's win earlier this week, the Conservatives promised to spend $5.3 billion over five years to defend northern waters against the Americans, Russians and Danes.

"Sovereignty is something, you use it or you lose it," Harper said at the pre-Christmas announcement in Winnipeg.

His plan included the construction and deployment of three new armed heavy icebreaking ships, as well as the eventual construction of a $2-billion deepwater port in Iqaluit and an underwater network of "listening posts."

At the time, Harper wouldn't say whether he would order military action if the ships or port detected an unauthorized submarine in Arctic waters.

Wilkins said he doesn't think that kind of military buildup is necessary in the Far North.

"We are simply having a disagreement on this," he said on Wednesday. "We have agreed to disagree, and there's no reason ... to say, 'There's a problem that's occurring and we gotta do something about it.'"

Wilkins also said he expects less anti-American sentiment from Harper's minority government, and added that he called Harper to offer congratulations on his election victory.

Also on Thursday, Harper acknowledged he had "a very friendly conversation" with U.S. President George W. Bush a day earlier, and hoped to arrange a meeting as soon as the leaders' schedules permit.

Opinions? I'm looking at you Paulie_D.

I agree with the arming of border officers but this seems wholly unnessacery and a waste of money not to mention internationally stressing.
NorthPoint
Canada should absolutely defend and reinforce its sovereignty in the north. It should have done more a long time ago.

Wilkins is a moron who should be sent home before he opens his mouth again.
leif
I have to agree with Paulie on this one...this is what our troops should be used for...not acting as police in afganistan...Its time for the UN to move in there!

Harper will have to build up the Canadian Military in order to do that.

Ambassador Wilkins made an error... obviously, he forgot that we are on the same side....

Less than 35%

Sorry, we're still the strongest military in the world. Not to mention the fact that the United States Navy is undisputedly the most powerful navy in the world, to the point where every other navy in the world could wage war against ours and we would dominate.

The reason the United States Military is considered the most powerful in the world even though we are the 3rd largest is because our power projection capabilities dwarf China, Russia, India, the EU, etc.

i mean fighting forces...not panzy assed Adamaral's ass wipers and such...

I was under the impression the Military in the US was recruiting like mad because it dosent have enough forces left at home...nor enough to secure Iraq

still...when you see the Canadian Troops coming across the boarder, those of you in WASH-ORE-FORNIA, dont be afraid, we bring universal health care, cheap drugs, legal marijuana, longer life expectancy, gay marriage and hoards and hoards of sex-starved arctic beauties!

I love you, you make me laugh with your ASSumptions all the time. And (really not a shot at you, obscure south park reference) there wouldn't be so many sex starved beauties if there weren't so many mooses.

There are 1,168,195 troops on active duty in the United States and its territories

QUOTE
The US has nearly 1.4 million active personnel, and over 325,000 of those are deployed outisde the United States and its territories.

QUOTE
Iraq - 169,200 soldiers. The American military, along with some 26,000 soldiers from other nations, currently provides secuirty and renforces the new Iraqi government following the invasion in 2003.
Afghanistan – About 19,500 American soldiers are in Afghanistan, following the invasion in 2001 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Around 6,500 other soldiers from the International Security Assistance Force are also deployed in Afghanistan.

QUOTE
Germany –75,603 soldiers
Italy – 13,354
United Kingdom – 11,801

QUOTE
South Korea – 40,258 soldiers; they have been deployed to counter North Korea since the Korean War.
Japan – 40,045 soldiers; they have been deployed here since 1945 and are still deployed to counter the threat from North Korea.

QUOTE
Hawaii – 35,810
Afloat – 120,666

These are the bulk of US troop deployments.

If we wanted to deploy 200,00 troops to Iraq next month we could. People who say the troops are spread thin are stupid. Resources may be spread thin, and were especially problematic for the National Guard which is about 40% of the ground force in Iraq a few months ago, but we have plenty of man power.

Recruiting numbers are down, as to be expected. It is not a question of the military being in trouble so much as the military not having the excess available they are used to.

Because it's important to always have a sizeable amount of incoming recruits?

See, this is why you guys have a tiny army and we have to protect you.

we have a relatively small army because:
a ) the liberals were idiots in this area and kept cutting funding
b ) we're 1/10th your size

I think you should give the US ambassador to Canada a little leeway. After all, the only merit for his placement was to donate more then $200k to the Bush campaign fund. He's a total diplomacy noob wink.gif

Look at teh bright side - at least he understands your language. The US ambassador to Germany barely knows german at all laugh.gif
