I got the trial version of Age Of Empires III, and this has become one of my new favorite games. I want the full version so badly! Has anyone else played it? I thought it was going to be similar enough that I could pick up and play, but I actually had to do the tutorial first. There are so many new ways to gather resources, and you have a "home city" that benefits by how well you play. and there are many cool features like destructible environments. when the towers or forts shoot cannon fire at a unit, if it hits a tree, the tree is knocked down, and the buildings when they are getting attacked actually crumble. and when units are attacking buildings they throw torches instead of just swinging their sword at a wall. its really a fresh new RTS game. i like the demo a lot and i bet the full version is vastly more refined. i really need to save up 50 bucks...
Age of Empires IIIand a quick tip... the motars that turn into howitzers, and then eventually imperial howitzers fucking kick so much ass its ridiculous.

o wow there is a demo! I'm all over that.
I saw it at Frys, but didn't feel like spending 50 bucks on something spur of the moment...
I loved the older ones...

its a feature of the new IPB we have. it compresses double posts like that into one to reduce clutter. clever, yet somewhat confusing.

I downloaded the demo and was very annoyed...I couldn't figure out what to do, and I'm a veteran of the old games. Also, it can only run at my computer at all-low settings (I can run HL2 at medium high but not this?) so it looks like crap. Also, I first tried it on Sandbox mode (to get a feel for it) and I was killed within three minutes. It was ridiculous.

clark, same with me. you gotta do the tutorial. its a really new spin on the age of empires games. i am a veteran of the old ones as well. but this one is so much different. just try the tutorial. you'll love it!

but there is no tutorial in the demo. Hence, frustration

Just played it... totally awesome. I don't have a super computer, but I could play with everything on high and whatnot, looked pretty good. I'm going to buy it.

well I played it again, and knowing what to do certainly helped, but in terms of both gameplay and the UI it is absolutely woeful compared to Rise Of Nations.

rise of nations compared to this is so impersonal. i think the full version will be more refined. i'll let you know whenever i get it.

I've beaten the singleplayer campaign and i've played it online quite a bit.
Towers are relatively useless unless you can get a line of them, but on every attack you'll lose a couple.
Get a fort up as quickly as possible. I used to put all my settlers on gathering food until about 700 when I move a couple to wood.
The Dutch are kind of a gimmick, and i'm tempted to say the French are too even though I played them the most. The Ottomans can be awesome if you get good at them, but you have to deal with it taking a while to get more settlers.
The singleplayer story was surprisingly pretty good, though nothing spectacular.
I prefer this to CIV4 but everyone else I know prefer CIV4 to this. I've just never liked the Civ games.

I uh... Something like that. I only buy games I really like, and to me, AOE3 doesn't have a ton of replay value. I'm going to buy RoN2 though.
Beware of useless lakes in the middle of maps. People have gotten tricked by the fog of war and started building in them only to realize they're tiny as shit. And again, forts. Forts forts forts. Fort up. 3v3 seems to be the most popular and the best player should take half of the map to defend and attack and the other two should group their forts. For maps in the Carribean which seem to have ocean seperating the two sides, in a 3v3 have one player focus entirely on building towers and teching them up. There's a card that increases the tower limit by 8 or something.
The big cannons the Ottomans get for free when they get a factory are fucking bonkers, and a line of those bitches can take out everything.

AoE III has lost its fun. I mean, now you have to manage a city, and deal with cards? Geez, just let me build a small civ and kill the other bastards.
BTW: Civ IV FTW!

You don't manage a city. When you get experience you can just make some nice touches like different lights or street performers or upgraded buildings for aesthetics, it has nothing to do with the gameplay. Cards are just an extra bonus, and while they're fairly vital, there's not a huge advantage once you pick a couple. The only real card that can fuck you over is the one you get at level 20 or something I think which lets you use an invulnerable hot air ballon with a huge sight radius for 30 seconds. I have a feeling they'll nerf that.

I remember the Age of Empires 1 i played. Was a great game, later i moved onto Starcraft now that game was the most fun i ever had in any strategic game for pc. AGE III.. dunno, but game looks much more of the same its complexity is for the hardcore fans though i figure. In my opinion this game might not do as well as people would believe.
