Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this case.

As I understand it, a U.S. diplomat (Joseph Wilson) visited Africa a few years ago to verify U.S. suspicions that the Iraqis may be purchasing uranium from the Nigerians. This belief was proven to be false and Wilson's findings were reported to the Bush administration.

Wilson was disenchanted with the Bush administration's propegation of the uranium allegation even after Wilson had released his findings. Wilson spoke out against the Bush administration and shortly after that, the identify of his wife, a CIA undercover agent was leaked by an unknown source.

It was suspected that someone from the Bush administration was responsible for the leak.

Lewis Libby, (top aide to the US vice-president) has now been charged with purgery and obstruction of justice in relation to the CIA leak.

the husband of this cia undercover, libby, didnt agree or vote with the shit that carl rove and his ppl liked, so (this is my take on it ->) they got back at him by leaking the name of libbys wife, the informant, to the press. the news paper writers didnt release their sources so some of the writers went to jail (NY Times and NY Post i think). so rove was on trial cos they wanted to see if he was guilty(which apparently he clearly is) but the "fair" jury found him innocent. i just hope she is safe.

rove wasn't even indicted. and the leak was legal anyways, as she hadn't worked overseas in 5 years. what is illegal is the perjury.

If the leak was legal then why does every news article I read say the grand jury is investigating who leaked the name of a covert agent? They aren't just investigating perjury charges...

Read the indictment...one of the main points of the charges that Libby is up against is that Plame's status WAS classified before the leak. Libby isn't charged with the leak but that doesn't mean that the leak was legal.

because when they were first investigating to determine whether it was legal or not, people supposedly knowingly lied. and that is perjury.

otherwise you would see them pressing charges against libby for leaking the name

yes it does. if it was illegal, he would have been indicted. they've been through that process already of determing whether or not it was illegal, and now they have moved on to perjury.

Wow...just when I thought this couldn't get any more confusing...so, it was classified information but it wasn't illegal to leak? And I am not trying to be confrontational...I am just REALLY confused now.

leaking an overseas CIA operative's name is only illegal if that person is currently working overseas or worked overseas within the past 5 years

but he allegedly lied about who gave him the information. the vice president gave him the info supposedly, but i think he is denying it and saying that a reporter who talked to karl rove or somebody else told him. now, it's perfectly legal for him and the vice president to exchange information like that even if it's within the 5 years, but if he lied about it he's covering something up. if he was covering something up, it was probably for political rather than legal reasons. again, this is all alleged, and it stems from a really complicated string of phone conversations and could be one huge mixup. it all depends on the order in which the information was passed along.
