so when we got the porsche back we put new racing seatbelts in becuase it would be going on track. But my dad also drives it as a daily driver (cept when it rains) and today he got pulled over. the officer said that since the seatbelts are not stock, you must request a "patch" from the manufactuer (sp) that states that the new seatbelts are as good as or better than stock. Then you must sew that patch onto the harness.

Anyone ever heard of this law?
May be just an Oregon state law but this is just rediculous.

* the new harnesses were simpsons so i think they will hold up good enough compared to the stock 914's. mad.gif

well they have to be DOT approved. just because they are SFI or FIA or whatever standards organization approved, doesn't mean they are DOT approved. so contact the department of transportation and ask them for yourself.

The cop isnt lying though. Just like on boats the floatation devices, you HAVE to leave those labels on them. Cutting em off is illegal, as silly as it sounds.

I'm not saying that you did. It's just that racing harnesses wernt intended for road use. Sure they may be more safe in an accident but they just wernt made for it. I've heard of people getting pulled over for them before too. I think some companies do make some thjat are certified though

oh ya... i kno they have to be certified but i just found it odd that we have to go through Porsche.. cuz how would they know if its safe enough

Another reason harness are probably illegal, is because people use them without roll cages. If you don't have a roll cage its probably more dangerous. God forbid you get in an accident and your car rolls over, if you have stock seatbelts, what happens is your body is thrown foward and you are leaned down, so if the roof collapses, your momentum pushed you down. Now with a 4 pt harness or whatever, your body can't make that motion because you are being kept in place. No roll cage and the roof will collapse right on your head.

Also the chest belts are usually bolted in the wrong spots, thereby crushing your spine.
